Do you have $12K, 2 years & health insurance?
People often ask what does it take to become
a BASE jumper and more often than not those
asking have zero experience parachuting...

___________________________________________

Going from zero skydives to the point of being
able to skydive solo is about 8+ jumps & costs
around $1,200 to $1,800 depending on the DZ.

Purchasing your own used skydiving rig, which
includes harness/container, main parachute,
reserve parachute, and an AAD (a computer
that deploys for you if you freefall too low)
start around $2,000. While new SKY rigs can
cost as much as $6,500 but you get a harness
custom sized, in your colors with embroidery,
options, and can last decades.

The recommended minimum number of SKY
jumps before one should start BASE is 200.

BASE Courses run anywhere from $500 up to
$1500 depending on the instructor, location,
and length of the course. While learning
from a mentor is superior and free, they
are much more difficult to find.

BASE rigs can be bought for as low as $800
used to $4,000 for brand new, custom sized,
your colors, with accesories and options, etc.

While actual BASE jumps do not cost any $$
getting to different objects can be expensive,
especially in the begining when you need a
forgiving span.

Here is a rough break down:

SKY Training $1,500
Used SKY rig $2,000
200 jumps x $25 = $5,000
SKY Total = $8,500

BASE Training $1,000
Used BASE rig $1,800
Getting to a S $700
BASE Total = $3,500

Hence the bare minimum one should budget
to become a BASE jumper is around $12,000
two years & hopefully some health insurance.

Yeah, about right. Although, nobody will give me health insurance......

Have you asked Mr. Obama for health insurance? I'm sure he will give it to you.

Zero Experiance, 100 Tandem, 1000 AFF, 750 skyrig, (no aad) 102 more jumps @13=1326, Borrowed Gear and mentored trip to Idaho from CA 300...

No AAD you ask? Your planning to BASE jump right? If you cant manage to pull skydiving, BASE wasn't for you anyway.

Total To Start
Approx 3500

To date
208 jumps= 3700 (tandem 100, AFF 1000, 200*13 jumps tickets)
Skyrig=750
Used Base canopy=600
New Perigee pro 850
Neptune 150
Idaho trip 300
25 base jumps
Total= 6200

Started base early, but have all the same numbers you quoted for half the price now. It can certainly be done much cheaper and I started Nov 2009 so not even a year and a half. All but about 40 of the sky jumps where april-nov 2010 also. Only additional expense is fuel to the DZ and BASE Jumps.

Just depends on your dedication to the sport and doing your homework shopping for gear...

J-2 1996 200 (ebay)
Sabre 150 800jumps new lines 400
Raven 1 1986 no rides 100
Reserve pack 50
Total 750

Mojo 260, 75ish jumps Dom 1998 600
Brand new custom P-pro 850

Cant get health insurance so non-issue, living below the poverty line there's no reason to anyway. No assets to protect.

For Fuck's Sake...
My original post was not sour grapes,
I personally did not get into skydiving
as a conduit to BASE jumping, and yes
each of you can take different paths...

FYI

There is no A in the word Experience.

Finding a $100 tandem without tits aint easy.

AAD's are required per USPA, not me, HIDGAF!

Yes, I know I did not include things such as
boots, helmet, altimeter, goggles, beer, etc.

Not sour grapes, but you sure sound sour now.

Man, having been an active basehumper reader for years I've had a bit of respect for most of your comments... But telling me to fuck off for stating my financial experiEnce to start BASE jumping is kinda a dipshit move. If this forum is here to provide info to beginners and aspiring BASE jumpers then all options should be mentioned

FYI, if your concerned about my speeling, grammer, en punkshoeashion I'm sure you can find more then just an A out of place.

Non-USPA dropzones don't have to follow USPA rules. I did leave out the I borrowed gear for a little while and I did have an AAD till 27 jumps. USPA only requires one until A licensed...

100 tandems all day everyday... Lodi, CA

I forgot the 20 bucks for goggles, I already own a helmet, Tennis shoes work great and beer is a standard life expense anyway.Wink

RE: nickfrey
Hello Nick,

Not all of my post was directed at you
which is why I replied to my own post
not yours and did not mention you by
name, a lot of it had to do with some
PM's I received.

But come on man, You are already a
jumper, the post wasn't really for you.

Being a long time reader you should
know it was aimed more at the virgins
who saw a YouBoob video and want to
BASE jump a wingsuit next month.

majority of us don't have the convenience of jumping at Lodi - thus we pay a lot more.

you are more of an outlier than a rule.

Best quote from The Book of Base, "Just because you can afford to base jump, doesnt mean you should."

Re: [GreenMachine] Do you have $12K, 2 years & health insurance?
You can easily shave off a grand of those expenses if you start with static line instead of AFF. By the time I had spend 1200 $ on sky jumps I had close to 40 jumps. Including the course fees.
Shortcut
Yes, I know...
IF you are a medium-hot female who is
willing to blow Abbie o*r Tanner you can
learn to BASE jump tomorrow for free.

IF you already have SKY & BASE gear
and can pack/jump them at will then
obviously this thread is not for you Tongue

* Most of the others who could do this
in exchange for head are either already
married, live too far away, or are female.

Re: [drdiesel] Do you have $12K, 2 years & health insurance?
I joined the skydiving club at my University. I used their gear and got a discount rate for jumps. The other students trained me at a discounted rate and I packed some to make jumps. I started in the static line program so that was cheaper too. So, the costs to gain some basic proficiency was almost nothing. And then my BASE mentor lent me his base container until I could get my own. He died on a skydive so I inherited the container. I bought a Fox canopy with a credit card and started visiting tall antennas. Total cost was almost nothing.

Only for people who've yet to earn their A-license which usually takes 25 jumps.

With inexpensive local gear rental programs (rent for the day, don't pay for pack jobs) you wouldn't need to buy one. At $25 a jump you may be better off with a Cypres that has little time remaining (one with a year left should be $250) and you could always sell it.
