The Russian Woodpecker
I had this idea about a trip to Chernobyl. Wouldn't it be cool to jump in a post-apocalyptic environment? I'm pretty sure there are other uber-secret soviet antennas and some (SL)jumpable buildings in Pripiat.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_Woodpecker Chernobyl-2 looks greatWink 600 ft of radioactive soviet funTongue

Won't it be dangerous? I mean if it's radioactive.

Re: [John_Scher] The Russian Woodpecker
Nah, the background radiation is 5 times normal at most, which isn't dangerous at all (below the safety limit of 1 year exposure). Although there are some concerns about radioactive dust particles(full of strontium isotopes)across the area. This is easily remedied by wearing a home depot respirator when the weather is clear. If it rains at least once every 3 days the particles are trapped by water and are no longer dangerous.

It goes higher then that http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=101OEaksU0s but would be something really cool to do.

Yeah, I saw this vid a long time ago.. They're measuring a good radioactive particle absorber(earth) at point-blank range, so the overall rad is higherSmile I'm feeling that this thread might end up in hangoutTongue
And I have nothing against thisAngelic

Re: [uer16] The Russian Woodpecker
Hmm wonder what kind of TSA alarms you would get on the way back from slightly radioactive base gear.....
Shortcut
Re: [mxrob92] The Russian Woodpecker
im thinking you better bring some old gear that you dont mind destroying, i hear that the grass and ground is very radioactive and if yo uleave something on it (canopy touching ground) it needs to be destroyed. im sure there are levels that you can say its fine or not fine, but still....dont bring a brand new rig =D

Some russian guy I met recently told me they are trying to open up Chernobyl for tourism.. don't know the truth of that... but if so, there is your chance!

Re: [JBag] The Russian Woodpecker
Yeah, you're right about the ground thingy. Not that it needs to be destroyed or anything, but cleaned for sure. I'm have 3 major problems:
finding a rig that I won't bother making mildly radioactive, getting the license that will allow me to get to the "alienation zone" and finding people willing to go with meCrazy

Re: [uer16] The Russian Woodpecker
This idea looks wicked! Specially the woodpecker.
Although I believe that radiation will not hurt me, before I go I would like to know how safe it is for my DNA and offspring.

Pretty soon you'll be able to pitch with your third arm and watch everything open with the eye growing on the back of your neck!

Best jump of 2012 so far for sure.

What???!!!

Already?
I knew there was plans to someday take it down but I was actually there about a month ago.
And there was no "signs" then that it was about to be taken down.

How did they do it?
Explosives?

How about the arch instead. I know site naming is frowned upon, but it you do get to jump it, good luck to you; in more ways than one!

Haha, that might actually be doable. I'd imagine they'd have to put roof access on the outside. Kevlar would be my protective gear of choice though.

Kevlar doesn't do much against 40 mm HESmile
We've scouted the Arch with a... friend, who... works there, as... consultants. Anyways, amount of security there is RIDICULOUS.
But there is a small chance that it could be done though, theoretically. I might just try that when my dogs stop barkingSmile
