To buy or not
FJC at the bridge. Followed by week at Moab. Buy a rig before trip or use someone elses rig?

if you haven't BASE jumped yet, how will you know what is appropriate for you?

many FJC's will let you jump a variety of canopies. you might find you have a preference.

I also will agree that a FJC should NOT be followed by a week in MOAB. it's just not good practice or risk minimization.

You better buy a rig because if you borrow your mates he is gonna be pissed when you go in with his rig in Moab.

Thanks for confirming what I was already skeptical of. Going to stick with just the fjc.

Spend that extra week at the bridge instead tuning your new techniques you've just learnt from the FJC.

Re: [ManagingPrime] To buy or not
So, I have just over 30 jumps, started BASE last May and did 3 jumps at Moab within 2 weeks of starting BASE. Now although I was fine with 3 excellent jumps there and had an awesome crew to guide me, looking back on it it was dumb. I have learned so much in the past 9 months and I realized that Moab is no place for people just starting out. You need to develop a serious relationship with your canopy before you jump off of those low walls. Do the fJC, stay in TF an extra week and jump, jump, jump. Learn your canopy. Practice different exits, go off facing the bridge, find stall points, backwards flight, etc. One day WHEN you open up with a beautiful rockface in front of you, you'll be glad you stopped and took the time to learn.

Yeah, what everyone else said.....And if you end up making a stupid newbie mistake like crossing your toggles while packing (someone actually did that and threw it on boobtubeCrazy) the Potato is a slightly more forgiving location to deal with it than Moab.

I dont know of a FJC (at least in the USA) that does not offer gear rentals during the course. Great route to take for trying different sizes, types (vented/non-vented), etc. Most will give you a discount on gear once you've complete the course if you purchase from them.

Good luck and good on you for taking advise to stay the fuck away from Moab until you've got more exp.

DooooooD!

There are so many good and active BASE jumpers in AZ. You need to talk to these jumpers in person instead of asking random people online.
