aircraft drop off
Hi all

I d'like to get an idea of what basejumpers think about jumping from an airplane.

My idea is to setup an air-base platform service for base jumpers, wing suit flyers and other crazy ones who all like flying longer, or simply want to skip the way up on foot.
What do you think about, if you could fall from 10'000ft. together with other 2 or 3 fellows over Lauterbrunnen or Jungfrau region in Switzerland?
Safe and affordable.
Would there be a demand? ...an extra candy day in your jumping vacation or on tour?

Tell me your opinion and eventually experiences from jumping off an airplane.
any comments on that are greatly appreciated.
thanks a lot!
Oli

What a crazy concept. What will you call it? wait...I've got some ideas.
Skyjumping
plane diving
plane chuting

You've got something here. I'm not sure what, but something. Can't believe nobody has thought of this yet.

you could make some sort of regulations and add an extra chute for a backup since you so high up

Re: [wasatchrider] aircraft drop off
Since we will be dropping from a plane instead of exiting off a wall he could call it a wingzone instead of an exit point. Or better yet, a dropzone.

My mom was right, I'm a fuckin' genius.

While fun, that's not BASE jumping.

A helicopter ride to the top of a cliff is nice enough to pay for. A skydive when I could be BASE jumping isn't. With unacceptable wind conditions at the BASE object one jump from the helicopter someplace calmer is nice but I wouldn't make a habit out of it - there are drop zones where I can fly smaller faster funner parachutes with more people for less money any weekend I care to.

Probably not.

A time wasting distraction from more fun.

Hey Oli,

I'm guessing you are not very familiar with either BASE or skydiving (sorry if I'm wrong, I am not trying to be insulting).

Nearly all BASE jumpers either actively skydive or have actively skydived in the past so they are quite familiar with jumping from aircraft. BASE jumping is quite different from skydiving and most active BASE jumpers are very tuned into that difference and much prefer it, so they will not be interested in a proposal that involves them jumping from aircraft.

Now I just feel like an ass.

Yes, you are correct. I am not a base jumper. But I am fascinated of it and I have all my respect for those who do that.
That is the point what bugs me. It would not be BASE jumping.
But I imagined, that there might be ppl. who specially look for a more prolonged proximity flying near the rocks.

That may indeed have appeal to some jumpers, but one thing to consider is the gear used. BASE jumpers generally use gear that would not be legal (in the United States) for use in jumping from aircraft. The reason is most BASE jumpers use single-parachute systems. In the U.S. dual-parachute systems whose designs have undergone certification procedures are required for jumps from aircraft.

I am not familiar with the requirements elsewhere in the world but if European regulations are similar, then it would be a problem.

What kind of aircraft do you have available?

I'm not sure if it still happens, but for many years there was a skydiving bookie in Romsdalen that would basiclally fly jump run along the cliff line on the one illegal cliff there. I think that it was mostly popular amongst skydivers, not BASE jumpers.

A Cessna-172 / 160hp

Per Tom's response above, I think what you are proposing would appeal mostly to skydivers. The reason for that is because BASE jumpers consider the launch from the fixed object to be one of their favorite, if not their *most* favorite part of the jump. Few would be willing to sacrifice that portion of the jump.

I think most BASE jumpers would consider a jump without the launch and acceleration alongside the object to be an extremely diluted jump that would not interest them.

I could easily imagine skydivers--particularly wingsuiters--being interested in being able to skydive in close proximity to some tall cliffs.

If you have not tried the website www.dropzone.com, I would recommend it. There is a wingsuiting forum there that might be very receptive.

Best of luck with your endeavors.
