I have only ever jumped a flik with 4 cells vented and jumped from 190ft to terminal with it.

Recently sold my gear and will be getting in the next week or so an TLs with a Flik UL... my new canopy only has the middle cell vented as I will be mostly be doing WS jumps.

However with a new job opportunity it looks like I will have more chance SD than SU now!!

So obviously before vtec was here we jumped un-vented canopys... however being used to an almost fully vented Flik, and now having a 1 cell vtec Flik UL... am I going to notice a difference?

I know full inflation will be delayed slightly and then so will canopy handeling etc... but im more thinking about:

If I go do my normal antenna at 300ft hand held im easly open at half way (ish)... but I dont want to pound in on my new canopy because it took to long to inflate.

I know it will be open in time... but inflated enough to control...?

Hi Tom,

I reckon you'll be fine!! I've seen a lot of unvented lowish jumps (mostly Ace) including a 240' freefall. I've also jumped an Ace 260 from ~ 300'. Pressurisation may be a little slower, but I wouldn't have any concerns freefalling 240' with an open LA.

I'm super new. So take my opinion as what it is, just a newbee's opinion.

But I think speed of opening has just as much to do with packing techniques and correct PC choice (bigger OR smaller) as it does vents. I jump an Ace 260 and it opens pretty fast IMHO. It makes nice flat turns from the rears right after it opens so control isn't a problem. And it sinks well too. I'm new, and I'm scared of heights, but I'd freefall a 300ft A.

Will APEX add extra vents to the UltraLite? I would feel comfortable doing lower freefall with 3 vents. But I dont have experience on Fliks, they may behave great with no or one vent.

If I was going to do mostly SD jumps I would probably sell that UL and get a regular Flik but that's just me!

I don't have much low Freefall experience at all, but I recently did my first 280' freefall and felt much better having my Troll MDV on my back. It opened with plenty of altitude to fly a small pattern and I now feel confident with that altitude, LZ pending. For a story at another time, I almost got electrocuted on that same jump as well.
