I Looked around in the forums here and DZ, but can't really find the answer I want. Is anyone using Pinnacle Studio to edit gopro video? Converting? What are you using? I'm not really a computer genius so editing for dummies type language would be nice.

Oh, and I don't have money for a MAC.

Get a MAC. I only use my MAC to edit so I can't help you. But why did I even chime in then? To brag about my MAC? Nay. I am not vain. I am sure a google search will provide you with the best answers or somebody else on here

mpeg streamclip is a good free conversion utility.
im not familiar with the win workflow, but in FCP its best to keep all your footage the same codec as your sequence so youre not having to render every time you move a clip around... I usually convert any gopro footage to match my main footage (gopro is a "b" cam for sure) to edit into the sequence, then render (when cut is done) to whatever output codec called for..

good luck, theres not really a "dummies" method.

I like final cut on my mac. Super easy. I PC software but got tired of waiting for shit to load and play back slowly. If you can afford BASE gear, then you can apply the savings techniques and get a MBP. You wont be sorry.

Depending on how involved you are in your editing a Mini Mac might be an affordable solution as well. Prob wouldnt be best for FCP but would be great for the iLife suit and probably FCE.

I do all my editing on my macbookpro but the lure of the new mini macs are quite appealing. Hook it up to the big screen via hdmi and edit on there.

quality retained depends entirely on the output codec selected..

it's the editor... not the equipment.
