Riser Airworthy Or Not
Hey there, my OCD has been killing me since one of my risers got a little frayed. Another rigger and myself have both looked at it and would have no problems jumping it. However, I would like a few more opinions.

Does this look perfectly airworthy? The tear doesn't go all the way through, just more frayed than anything. Trying to decide whether I should ground the rig until I can purchase a new set of risers or not. Thanks.

I'd jump it.

Just a personal opinion, but if you've gone to the lengths to ask a rigger, and ask for public internet opinion, it's obviously playing on your mind. I know if it was me, the logical side of my brain would keep telling me it's fine, but the rest of me wouldn't stop thinking about it at the exit point, etc... and that a new set of risers are only like $60...

For your birthday ask for a new pair.
Till then jump the piss out of them
and enjoy the gear fear Tongue

Oh, and in my opinion, a bit of OCD is
good for parachutists, well as long as
it does not require you to open your rig
at the exit point to confirm that the
bridle is still there and attached Wink

It is definitely playing on my mind, I'm very OCD but I do trust my gear; something like this bugs the shit out of me though.

I figured it'll be fine, I'll have to cope with it til I get a new set.

Haha Green, I'm not there...... yet Smile

Two reasons to get new risers:

1. Even a minor abrasion on nylon webbing can reduce its tensile strength by half.

2. Elimination of gear fear is a good thing. If you find yourself at an exit point wondering whether your gear is BASE worthy, then you have not properly prepared for the jump by making absolutely sure that your gear is BASE worthy. Blow off the jump, go fix the problem, and then jump when you can do so with confidence.

Just my two cents.

HONK if you love internal bleeding.

Take your fingernail see how much of the material you can scratch out from the edge of the riser.

Can you feel the damage on the webbing where it was abraded?

What position did you pull in Cool

Walt has spoken. That's my two cents as well.

Use a lighter and burn the fray off. That would be good enough for me.

When you do that on webbing, it creates jagged ends on the fibers that can do additional damage over time. Better to leave the fray alone.

Just my two cents. Your mileage may vary.

So FUCKED! Better off just jumping without your rig. It will increase the resale value!

It should also be noted that the main structural integrity of webbing comes from its' edges. Just sayin'...

It's not proper CDO, until alphabetized. ;)

Looking from behind the internets, the riser looks jumpable after little tlc is aplied. :)

Repair it with duct tape, nothing can break that miracle tape.
If fact just make risers out of the tape and its a sure win.

Wow, I didn't expect to get so much meaningful input on the matter. Cool

I was going to jump an 8-10 sec SU this morning, but when I grabbed my gear to get ready... I called it; waiting til I get new risers. Frown

Anyone looking to buy a set of barely used risers?

Only if you singe the frayed areas with a lighter and wrap it up with duct tape. LOL
