Helmet help
I know at least a handful of people are gonna wanna say something like use the search feature, but I'm posting because someone has already done all the searching and figured this shit out and can hopefully give me some insight and save me the time.

I just got a full face mountain bike helmet, but it references that it is for bicycling only, and the padding in it is shauty. I remember reading about d30 (i think) foam and that it was awesome for impact protection. Anyone verify that yet. IF not is there something else you could recommend I use to reline the helmet and make it a little better at protecting my noggin.

Also, I've been looking into getting a helmet cam for a couple years and the problem I always run into on picking one is they're no good in low light. As far as I know the gopro and contour are not very good in low light. Does anyone know of a good low light helmet cam?

Thanks to anyone that has already done the homework and is willing to share their research.

Re: [SBCDave] Helmet help
Just searched a bit and found a thread saying hc-40 was good, but then I realized it was from 2004...lol

I have enough miles to get this one for free if it's good.

Re: [SBCDave] Helmet help
the best low light cameras are the hc96, pc 1000, hc-5, then maybe the hc-40's series ,cx-100 then the go pros... the problem is that there are big. the cx-100 is smaller, better than the go pro but still crappy in low light. there is nothing small good in low light. either go bigger and get good low light or f@#%@ it and go small.

the mountain bike padding should be fine. they are rated for decent impact. i wouldnt change the interior unless u got it used from karnowski,, then you want to boil the cooties out and get a new liner.

Re: [SBCDave] Helmet help
Like deep-sea squid, good low-light cameras need big light collectors (sensors). That is why there is no good low-light helmet cam.
You could get one with IR and put some IR lights along side it.

for an HD camera that is good in low light, Sony cx-7 is pretty good. it has an IR light and 'supernightshot' mode. i found that with a .3 wide angle lense, the cameras IR light gets partially blocked, so i ordered an accessory that has like 20 IR lights in it. it plugs right into the top of the camera. i opted against the cx100 because it had no IR light or night mode.

as far as d3o padding goes -
i saw a video of some dude wearing a cloth beanie with d30 sewn into it. another guy proceeded to hit him in the head with a shovel several times without causing harm / pain to the wearer of the d30 beanie.
of course it was a video on the internet, so who knows how well it actually works. Either way i plan to buy a cookie helmet next with the d30 liner. smaller and lighter than average mountainbike helmet, and probably more protective.

Pretty much agree with everything Lane said. I have a cx7, cx100, go pro. Cx7 with a small lens is the only camera I try and use at night... Cx100 is better for everything else, as long as the sun is up, but I should really look into that accessory though.

As for the d3o, I have a 'few' helmets, and my one main fullface helmet is a cookie gas with d3o... still no where near as good as some of my downhill mountain biking helmets, but at least at has a 'little'more impact protection, and is a compromise between weight, protection and the ability to have different cameras.

I also own a cookie rok, which does not have the d30 liner that cookie Ozone has... And Cookie told me they would not sell me a liner from the ozone for the Rok. Shitty. Very Shitty. I like the helmet and have quite a few jumps on it.

If anyone knows a source to get d3o material, I am all ears. I have some d3o six six one knee/shin/elbow pads and they are great in terms of packability, weight and protection, but the quality is sub par.

I have been looking to get a Cookie helmet myself and I noticed if you click into the helmet accessories section of the Cookie website, you'll find helmet liners. It appears that you can order which ever liner you need??

Cool.

At the time I asked, the response was

In reply to:
We are currently building liners for the Ozone helmets. I am sorry but we are not selling them seperately at present.

Nice to know I can get one now.

Thanks everybody. Juston you got a link to any of your cx-7 video I can check out? I got a 40% off coupon for 661 from bridgeday the year before last I might get some shit to cut up. Anyone know if you can cut and sew the d30 without ruining how it works?
