Isn't cutting off communications with them only exacerbating the situation and showing them that you are just as confused and/or uncaring about language and communication as they are? In your eyes is clear communication staying silent? The future doesn't need to be like Idiocracy... talk to them and explain why you think grammar is important. Maybe it will help.
Also I'm confused about your last sentence... are you saying you don't want them to make grammatical errors or do you mean their uncle likes to jack off the horse without them??
base570,
I did discuss the importance of grammar and proper communication with my nieces; they're precious to me and it's important to me they develop properly. So I certainly did not cut off texting without having that discussion. And we certainly communicate in other ways.
But I hold fast to my texting decision because I know which resumes I toss in the trash can when I'm hiring - the ones that doesn't spell there stuff rite on cover leters. And I don't want my nieces to miss employment opportunities because they are thought stupid by hiring managers.
I am not confused or uncaring about language. I love language. And I try to understand what I know and what I don't know. For instance, the whole lay/lie thing still trips me up, and I routinely have to ask myself, "Which is the transitive verb and which is the intransitive?" But I fear kids these days are growing up without developing a basic understanding of parts of speech. And they don't even realize there's a difference between there, they're, and their.
As to the horses, if I'm jacking off a horse, I don't want my nieces around. That's private stuff I don't want to share with them. And frankly, I don't think their mother would appreciate it if I did.
