Heliboogie Questions....
I've been talking to Stein, who has been great but have some questions for those of you stateside....

- For international flights am I better waiting until the date gets closer for better rates or should I just buy now?

- For those that have flown over, what airline did you use?

- Did you buy through the carrier or did you use a multi-reference site (expedia, hotwire, etc).

- Going to try to spend 2 weeks there, should I go over several days before the boogie and jump or hang around several days after the boogie and jump? Plenty of jumpers around both of those times?

- Did you have any problem checking your rigs or did you just carry them on? I'm bringing 2.

Thanks for any help, cheers.

Re: [WatchYourStep] Heliboogie Questions....
Look on Kayak too. They always have great deals. And look for flights that depart the USA from Philly not New York. They always seem to be cheaper. This year I got a return flight Philly-Stavanger for $400 US. Start looking now and buy them when you find the best deal.
Getting there early there will be a lot of jumpers hanging around which can be fun at the bar but pretty aggravating when you get to the exit point. Staying after the boogie there will be less jumpers which makes it a lot easier to get on the bus/exit point/boat ride. Your choice.
I have always carried my rigs on board, skydive or BASE.

Re: [WatchYourStep] Heliboogie Questions....
i got my ticket about a month prior from san diego and it was $800. its weird how those ticket things work. i was finding better deals on expedia then any other site, including kayak...everyone else was giving me $1300. i would go a few days early so you can walk the landing area and get used to landing there since it is decently tight. i carried on my rig and checked all my other bags.
i also took the ferry from stavanger, im sure stein can tell you more about getting there from SVG

regarding airline tickets...
- generally, the earlier you buy, the cheaper the price
- if airlines get their forecast wrong, they adjust. prices may go up if there is a shortage. prices may go down in an attempt to fill vacant seats. (the cheaper prices may not be available through "normal" challenges.)

Heliboogie may be for a week this upcoming summer woohoo...2010 heliboogie i am sure we had 109 jumpers....

if ya come a few days before you can get use to the area and know what its like when we dont have a helicopter so make sure ya fit...also start looking at accomodation as it gets booked out early..

that was a requirement of the SBK years ago. I believe it is still SOP.

(it's also a really fine habit for ANY site. Smile)

True but I think the incredulity regarded the assertion about the "decently tight" landing area Shocked

I was thinking the same thing, decently tight?? Did the HUGE grass landing area along the water in the fjord change? Hopefully he's joking?

If it was that huge, then there wouldn't be people femuring into the rocks every year :(

That's gonna happen regardless of the size of the landing area. Make it as big as you like and they will still find some thing to fuck into.

Broken bones is related to a landing wind problem, not a landing zize problem.

Just a thingy you brought to mind. It was a standard that I introduced, walking the LZ. Joe Blow said he didnt need to see the LZ as he had seen it on the ferry on the way in. So I asked him if he saw the sandy beach LZ. He said yes. So we took a boatride to check out the LZ.
Kj is geared towards skydivers who are used to golf course type of LZs. If one does the main LZ and overshoots by 1cm into a boulder, bones are going to pay.
Better is take the shoreline if one cannot land within 3m (conservative) of wished.
Please dont apply BASE logic to skydivers.
In BASE you are the safety man. In skydiving, there are peeps to tell you if it safe to jump. As a BASE jumper, speaking, You are totally responsible for your decisions and you will pay.
We cannot tell you how to fly your canopy into the boulders. Us ground crew can only tell you whats up with the winds. All else is upon you the jumper.
Take care,
