Re: [base283] Rollover, whilst intoxicated, cheststrap undone, in front of law enforcement officer
Tom asked me how I felt about folks screwing up sites where we already have access, and here is my PM reply. BTW, I'm not saying this is gospel, I'm still trying to figure out BASE, just like I've been doing for thirty years, LOL! But I do know, its to our advantage if we can discuss these ideas . . .
>How do you feel about people doing things that have the potential to close legal objects<<
I haven't really thought through that angle but at first blush it's this; Nothing we've done (in general) in the "may I" game is working. Like every few years (since Jean Boenish did so) we mount a new campaign to get access to Yosemite. And that carrot seems right there in front of us, it seems like we can almost reach out and touch it. But how long has that been going on? 25 Years? And I think, at the rate we're going, it'll go on for another 25 years.
On your question of screwing up access to established sites (and I suppose you mean the potato bridge) there's two ways to look at that. We'd need a new name for guys who did it that, not site burners, but site ruiners. And those people should be ostracized. But we've always had that problem in BASE and I don't see that changing. Those guys, like I've said before, are the lost souls rebelling against the rebellion, LOL!
The other way to look at it is if we mount a full in your face campaign for BASE there are going to be casualties. And there's something to be said for the fact there's always been one thing that has worked for us and one thing that hasn't. We don't follow rules and if we did there would be no B.A.S.E. jumping like we know it today. So there's no denying that works. And when we try to implement rules it often backfires and causes discontent in the ranks. So there's no denying that doesn't work.
Again, let's look at the potato bridge. They let you guys jump there, because Idaho is all about personal freedom, but then they add in some "except fors!" Like the thing about the railing, calling the Sheriff prior to jumping, removing the ramp over night, etc. And all that is reasonable, but if you guys would have called their bluff right off that bat, and just did what you wanted, when you wanted, and how you wanted 15 years ago then maybe the "freedom" Idaho is so proud of would actually exist there.
I think both you and I have had (and are having) the same problem in this sport. Every time we tell someone how they should go about B.A.S.E. jumping we get told to go fuck ourselves. It may be a safety issue, an access issue, or just a general rule for life issue, but it always gets thrown back in our faces. Sometimes I think you and I have suffered that more than most. (I now know totally how Jean Boenish must feel.)
But, never-minding that, the sport's ace in the hole is public opinion. What finally shot down "Don't ask, to tell?" It was public opinion! No matter what the Tea Party says this country is still run by the people. So now that the public's opinion on BASE is generally favorable, and the more they see it, the more favorable it will get, it's time, I believe, to play that card.
Jester did us the biggest favor in the world! But let's dissect it. If you read the comments concerning him all over the internet, even with him appearing under the influence, the opinion is mostly positive. Now look back on Jeb's video from the Empire State Building. That one didn't get the same reaction. The reason? Jeb, even to non-jumpers (I know you don't like the term "whuffo" or have you changed? LOL) saw him as arrogant and out for himself. On the other hand Jester comes off as the "everyman" just out for a few laughs, and the fact he stuck it to the man was the cherry on top.
I doubt BASE will ever reach "respectable" status like storm chasing, or some other extreme screwball pursuits, but it will reach "acceptable" status, if it hasn't already. And yes, for you guys that moved to Twin Falls specifically because of the bridge it would suck big if it got shut down. But are you really free to jump that bridge or is that freedom just an illusion? It seems like it is since you all constantly live under the threat of it being shut down, and it forces you personally, Tom, into the role of BASE cop. Which I'm sure you don't enjoy.
If they did shut it down, I'm sure the local critics of BASE would be happy, the ones who drive the bridge everyday and think, "Jesus, I hope my kids never start doing that." But for Idahoans at large, they'd be for keeping it open, they'd be for freedom! You'd have that public opinion on your side. And in the meantime it wouldn't hurt you clowns to be "real" B.A.S.E. jumpers for a while, LOL!
