packing a troll
so i have been working on packing my troll into a gargoyle container with jessy halls packing technique
question is it does not have any tabs for clamping in the exact right spot for the lines it can throw off the alignment and make thing harder to make symetrical
also the troll does not seem to be as square as the blackjack that jessy uses and seem to be harder to flake everything out flat and organized
does anybody have experience with the troll and some advise or tips
should i get the tabs added to the canopy? or is it not worth it?
thanks for any help

jessy is actually one of my mentors and he helps me out im packing as much as i can before i go over to his house again for more pointers he is checking to see how much i can get tabs put on if i want them
i have not had him supervise me pack my troll and he uses a blackjack so i thought i would ask people that use a troll
i think to use or not use tabs i a question that can be answered generally on the internet even though it is opinion

I've never watched Jesse's video, so I can't give any packing advice.

from my experience, packing tabs are simply aids. clamps, bungees, packing mats, etc. are all helpful, but unnecessary.

if you pack up the rig, as best you can, then pull it out and repeat, I bet you'll slowly sort it out.

somehow, I'm guessing you pay a packer when (if) you skydive!

I have a very early Troll and the tabs are in the right spot. Are you sure this is the case with your canopy? I don't think I've ever seen a production Troll that didn't have the tabs correctly placed, and I can't picture someone making such a modification after market.

If yours are misplaced, having them moved to the correct location isn't a bad idea, especially if you are using them as landmarks when you are learning to pack. Of course, you can always just clamp (or grab if you are not using clamps) the topskin at the correct point, regardless of where the tabs sit.

Two things usually make it feel this way:

1) The size of the canopy. Larger canopies just have more fabric in them, and they feel messier (and the pack job gets messier more easily) when packing.

2) The brake settings. Variance in the brake setting will change where the tail sits on the pack job, giving the impression that it's "not square."

If you're comfortable doing that, there is nothing wrong with it.

The tabs are just a landmark to let you know where to pull, so you don't have to eyeball it every time.

For a quick fix, try getting a fabric marker and laying the canopy out, then putting a mark where each tab will go. That will give you something easy to see and use as a landmark. It's still not as easy as having a tab sewn there, but it helps make things a bit easier.

What is the DOM on that Troll? It's got to be pretty early if it has no tabs at all.

Re: [TomAiello] packing a troll
i beleive it is 2001 but i would have to double check although it only have about 50 or 60 jumps on it

i was thinking to put marks on it as well just have to pick up the right marker for the material

just wanted to make things easer and a bit quicker knowing it is going to be symetrical

im not trying to rush the pack just avoiding realignment during the middle of my pack

I just checked mine and it is DOM Dec 2001.

Not having a mark (or tab) there could actually make your pack job quite a lot sloppier if you have to re-arrange things in the middle of the pack job to check that they are centered. I haven't watched Jesse's video, so I'm not sure if you need to do that or not.

Sending you a PM, as well.

Tom, Jesse's video isn't too far off from the basic concept of the one you teach. The main difference is the way the canopy is consolidated toward the end, and of course 1-10 less packing tools.Wink

wasatchrider, I have around 50 packjobs and jumps on a Troll 264 MDV using jesses' method (i've modified a few things here and there to better suite me). The flakes don't look as pretty as his in the video, but everything turns out symetrical.

Just remember to keep the lines even and in the middle and fabric to the outside. Looking a little sloppy doesn't mean its asymettrical.

What exactly is not symettrical that the packing tabs or throwing off? I'll see if I can better understand what ur running into.

Edit to add: Tom its more like your personal pack job I've seen you do to where you fold your flakes over the tail at the end.

i havnt had major problems just minor one time
to clarify there are no tabs
i pull on the material where i think the lines match up
only really had one problem where some of the material was clamped in the wrong spot different cells where spaced apart from the other clamps and had to minor adjust things
i found a rigger in my area to put on tabs to make it easier for me i just want to make sure everything is perfect in my pack jobs there are enough other things that can go wrong i dont want my packjob to be one of them...

I have a Troll MDV manufactured in early 2004, ordered brand new and the tabs are off on it also. The tabs at the "A" lines are right on, the next set of tabs is off maybe 2 inches, 3rd set 3 inches and so on. Not really a big deal since one can see where the lines actually are but it did seem odd.

The Troll line attachment is off set so you well never get it the fold to look square like blackjack, fox. so just make it close as you can.

My Dec 2001 Troll came with no vents, because they were not yet offered as an option. I sent the canopy in to Morpheus after they began offering the MDV and had it retrofitted with 4 valves.
