You have been skydiving since 1997 but do not know anyone who BASE jumps so you are looking online? You just created a profile in August after skydiving for 13 years? Why would someone show you how to BASE pack when you could at least plug in a name in your profile? No money for a first jump course?

Something does not sound right.

Just because he started skydiving in 97 does not mean he has been skydiving all that time. He could have had a 10 year break or longer.

a little history, started skydiving in 97, got married in 98 and quit, airborne in 00, divorced in 02, started back in 04, lost my good job in 05 and quit again, started back again last year, lost my next good job two months later, started hanging out at the new dz this fall, plan on aff to finish up student status during income tax time.
i have about 45 skydives and 26 airborne jumps but still don't have a skydiving license cause that shit's expensive when you're a student. i know at least one base jumper in ky, he runs the dz that i'm gonna go to to in march, since the last gig didn't work out. he probably reads this, so "hi".
man, i'm 40 years old, this shit ain't going anywhere. i'm in no hurry. i've been doing a lot of reading lately and decided it's time to get off my ass and start learning. jumping out of planes has been a passion of mine for a while now, but i've always wanted to base jump. there's no need to rush things, however, and i figure if i could find someone that lives an hour away, i could make use of my time this winter. if it don't work out here, i'll give my buddy a call and i know he'll hook me up. being an unemployed college student kinda limits me on funds right now.

i have a 220 raider, but can you pack a skydiving canopy like a base? and you miss all the good shit with a video, like personal instruction. i learned to pack from a rigger and all i do is flat pack. from about jump #10 or so, i've packed almost every chute i've jumped(except military obviously). i actually learned how to pack over beers with some of the jm's at the hanger, of course we popped them all before they got jumped, but it was a hell of a way to reinforce the memory.
actually, the more i think about it, the more i think all beginners should emulate me insofar as starting skydiving, learning to pack and jump your own shit, getting into the mechanics of the canopy and then sorting out when do i get my equipment and jump. patience is a virtue, however, i would recommend skipping the 10 year gap in progression.
of course, that could be something else talking, that shit gets me rambling.
thanx to all the replies.

Sure, although once you've got a neat stack of canopy with center cell top skin tucked around how ever layers you prefer it takes more folds to get it into a short skydiving container main tray than a long BASE container and you can't open the nose center cell around the top S-fold the same way.

OTOH, you may get tricks that local jumpers either don't know or use.
