Anyone jumping with fused ankle?
Hei all,

I have my right ankle fused, and eventually (after one more surgery) I´m looking forward to get back jumping, and would appreciate if someone with similar situation would like to share his/her experiences with me...Thanks Smile

My left ankle is fuse - i have up and down movement, but no "rolling" motion - i.e. If I stand on my left foot and you push me from the side, I fall over!

I still skydive with it and haven't had any issues. If you can run without too much difficulty you should be OK. The doctor told me it is very strong when it is fused, but I find my balance is compromised due to lack of "suspension".

I am in pain with it every day anyway to varying degrees, so a little more now and again after pushing it doesn't really matter.

Just don't fuck up the other one!!

Ouch that sucks man. The doc told me that within 10-20 years Ill probably need mine fused too cause I have very little joint space. Im praying that they figure out cartilage transplants before I have to get it done to me. I mean, they already do them in the knee, so why not the ankle?

Good luck you guys!

deja vu. open fracture july 21 this year. calcaneus in 31 pieces. subtalar joint "obliterated
". can't afford subtalar fusion. Just praying for less pain. still on one crutch. If still painful....bad...after six months, will get fusion/grafting . Plan to return to base on march first.

Eh guys, dont rush the fusion, there doing ankle replacment with artifishial joints now, doing lots up in canada and seem to be working well. Check it out, the system looks realy solid.

Cartilage replacement is progressing fast for knees indeed. I havent heard much about it in the ankle yet, but I have heard about full on joint replacement with a metal ball and socket. With how fast medicine is progressing these days I definitely wont be fusing mine any time soon, and I definitely recommend waiting as long as possible if anyone is contemplating it at this point.

Hi guys,
I was told by my doctors (who both are said to be one of the bests, if not the best in Finland in field of leg injuries and artificial joints) that artificial joint is not an option if I want to jump again. There were also some other problems in my case, like damaged circulation in foot etc., why they didn´t recommend artificial joint for me, but as soon as I told them that I want to jump again they said that artificial joint in ankle is not suitable for any contact sport, but with fused ankle it should be ok. They also told that in knees there are much better experiences with artificial joints, but artificial joint in ankle is much more troublesome...

this is what I was told, and I made my decision to get ankle fused based on that. I´m sure that medicine is making progress and in future artificial ankle joints will probably get better, but I had to make my decision last winter based on knowledge we had then. And at least even though fused ankle might slow down my jumping it won´t stop it Smile
