How stupid is this idea?
Would it be possible to make a small parachute glider of sorts for big walls? I am talking a 2/3/4 cell mini parachute with just two toggles to hang onto. Sort of like wingsuiting, but being verticle, and probably going a little faster.

Is this possible? I don't know how the load bearing would work on the lines, but I assume there has to be a configuration where it could be done and not overstress the lines.

Yes

Next question please.

So... basically you mean flying a power kite off a cliff?

Sounds like fun. let us know how it goesTongue

Sort of. But alot smaller, and shorter lines. It could work.

I doubt it would be faster, a lot more drag, unless you are referring to faster falling. It would prodably be fun to watch though. ShockedCrazy

Was it eloy where the guy burned in under his supper small canopy? As I recall he was dead before impact.

Lots of vid. Lots and lots of vid.

His name was Chris Martin. He was doing test jumps on a 49sq XAOS, I believe. Wingsuiters on the load say the canopy spun up so fast on deployment that he was unconscious almost immediately from the G-forces.

hell yea, I have seen a video of this dude doing just that. BUT that was on a small sea side dune or something... and he did pretty well. He was actually soaring with a kitesurfing kite.

"parachute with just two toggles to hang onto"

how to steer? and try hanging on to double rings and tell me how long you can stay.

Awesome, so it's possible.

Why would it be so hard to hang on? Maybe I'm missing something...

aye, I did not say what you are thinking is possible. I just said what jakee was thinking of i.e flying a power (traction) kite. I absolutely do not think that thing could be used on big walls as you want. Smile

with 2/3/4 cells, something like wingsuiting.....are you also going to land that thing after proximity flying it along big walls? Are you competing with Jeb Corliss in his wingsuit landing project?

It would be like wingsuiting, but less dangerous, in my opinion. You could totally proximity fly it and even do a wall run off the side of the cliff like a ninja. But I was thinking you would just let go of one toggle after you are done, and then deploy. I guess it could tangle, though.

I would suggest, you prepare a rope, around 200 feet, one end tied to your wingsuiting buddy's hip and the other end, that will have two toggles(rings), in your hands.

Exit: you will be hanging down the cliff holding onto the toggles and the wingsuit buddy will do a normal exit.

Flying: As her flies by, you will be able to hang onto him while he stays just far enough from the wall so that you can start running on the wall like a Ninja, holding on to the toggles.

Landing: once you are out of wall to fly by and you guys go for landing, ask him to wingsuit 'flare' about 200 feet above ground so that you can land (let go the toggles) and then he will still have 200 feet to pull and land his parachute.

This will be an epic project to work on. All the Best!

I'm just having fun. Isn't that what basejumping is all about?

I'd gladly do a jump with you anytime. PM me and well arrange something.

thought there was no doubt about that.

But heck, it sounded fun, so just keeping the 'not sure how stupid' idea alive :-D Just that perhaps it should be in the "Hangout" and not "Technical" since he just want to HANG on to the toggles. :-P

Defiantly not trying to troll. I actually thought it would be a fun idea. But granted, this is coming from someone whose first jump was a solo unpacked 80 foot B. Maybe all my ideas are just stupid.

I still think it's possible to hang on the toggles. Why would that be so hard?

the harnessless systems are pure death traps.
The Hero said....

you would need a very strong almost unrealistic strong grip to hold on
The Hero said....

and I would add. Get a paraglider, go to an open space on a strong wind day...>20kmph and do some 'kiting' or 'ground handling' as paragliding pilots call it by just holding on to the As and Ds. During a gust you will see how much force you are dealing with. Of course, a paraglider is MUCH MORE in area (mine is 21m2) and naturally it will demand a lot to hold on to it, but the magnitude of force you experience with this might relate to the ones you would if you go down a wall on a smaller one.

And my biggest concern about HANGING on to toggles is the turns and the inevitable collapse. Of course if you are going with a 2/3/4 cell, I see less chances of a collapse but the radical turns will put such force on your arms that you will repent. On a harness system, as you must have already realized being a BASE jumper with over 100 jumps, one is actually 'sitting' into the harness (legstrap) and not really holding onto the risers/toggles. Its way too different from keeping yourself in place by actually HOLDING something.

Okay ...just to finish it off....this is what I was talking about.

and even the 'kite soaring' dude has a harness attached. And he is using his hands only to steer. He is NOT hanging onto it.

Cool video. thanks! I guess I won't be hanging. Not as cool anymore though. If I wanted to get a harness and a small chute I would just go skydiving.

The name is correct but the size is not.

21 square foot 21 cell Xaos. Direct bag deployment out of a skyvan. 1 toggle released prematurely. It spun up so fast he couldn't cutaway.

I conversed with Chris online many times a week. I took him on his first California BASE jump off the Green. He picked out my canopy size and also made modifications to Ravens for me anytime I asked. He was a great man.

Stand by and I'll find the fatality report.

....

Found it. Here is the text from the fatality reports on dz.com

"Description
This was a planned skydive from 13,000 feet AGL that included Chris and 3 wingsuit flyers all of whom were wearing video cameras. The jumper was flying and experimental Xaos 21, 21 sq/ft canopy that had been flown successfully by 2 other individuals prior to him jumping it. The canopy was hooked up to a specially designed system made for intentional cutaways and a normal rig was worn over it. The canopy was deployed from the back of a Skyvan out of a D bag being held by another individual. He exited the aircraft and deployed his canopy. Reports from people on the jump indicates that one steering toggle was accidentally released right after opening which produced a violent flat spin. The wingsuit flyers chased Chris out the door as soon as they saw that he was in trouble. He was seen trying to cut away the main canopy, but the centrifugal forces were too great. All wingsuit flyers have stated that Chris was unconscious by 8,000 feet AGL and they stayed with him as long as they could prior to their own deployments. One jumper landed near him shortly after impact. The other two flyers notified manifest."

something like this could be taken off a cliff/slope. then just let go and deploy your parachute. You won't catch me doing it first tho

Search Alex Peterson Kitesoaring.

We've shortened up lines on kites, essentially to make the kite more responsive, but, never to the extent that they're near the length of base/skydiving lines... There's another video of a direct bag jump from a hot air balloon - the kite is made by Flysurfer, very nearly identical to a paraglider, but much lighter. It seemed like a better choice than a leading edge inflateable. Now, with that said, you sound like a troll, so if you do try to do, what it is you say you want to do, yer just going to die anyway.
