Carl and Jean Boenish jumps from Trollwall in 1984, video
I found this video on Norwegian Broadcasting television.
I do not know if the video has been posted on the forum, in that case I did not found it.

"Skydiving on the Troll Wall has been a recurrent theme in our television broadcasts. In connection with the Norwegian Broadcasting television's 50-anniversary we fetch the articles from the archive, and today you will have to join back to 1984, and a story that made a strong impression"

Good find! Its very interesting to see jumpers from times past and a shame we don't have more footage of the sort

First time I see footage of Carl Base jumps.

According to the story in (Nick's)Fatality list, Carl must died a few days later after this footage taken, in the same place........very very very sad....

Jean's interview was immediately after Carl died. Notice how calm she is. It's strange.

Carl's footage is coming out in the film Gravity. Jean wouldn't let anyone else access the material.

Lok, Carl did die on a jump from a site on Trollveggen, so it was "the same place" in that way, but he did not jump from any site featured in the clip. He tried a different place that, as Jean pointed out, was not a very good site -- especially for a slider-up jump.

I still remember getting the phone call about it from Phil Smith (BASE#1) as if it were yesterday.

As Jean also said, however, Carl didn't want anyone to miss a beat in their lives because he died -- and the sport he created certainly didn't miss any... and I know exactly how Carl's laugh would fill a room if he watched video of the things now being done by his "children."

Everyone deals with sorrow in different ways...
Nothing strange about that, it's human nature

Oh, Carl's laugh and love of a carton of buttermilk sitting under the front seat of his car for eight hours in the Texas summer heat!

Love,

Thank you for posting that. I've jumped with Carl and Jean and was really bummed when Carl died. Jean's action to jump again was very courageous. She appeared calm, but if you know Jean, that's her. She was young and still very committed to Carl and his vision.

Nice!!!

that must be one rare footage! Thanks for sharing!

frankly speaking, of course having heard of him, I had never seen a video. just makes me think how 'untouched' all the spectators must be then with what goes on before and during a jump. These days, with GoPros in every angle on the body, watching videos is like 'being there' for most! Carl's video is epic!

(on a side note.... sorry, a bit off topic..why the heck does the media ALWAYS try to dig into people's minds and personal space????specially when they have just lost someone. "How were you feeling?" ..."did you think about your husband/wife/child when doing this?" WTF......thats something really really really personal. Was not surprised to see Jean being reserved and actually said 'just like any other jump' but then the guy goes "did you think about anything special?" *&^&%^$^%$^I(* )

anyway.

SALUTE Carl !!

Carl did jump from Stabben that appears for first time in the video at 0.10

Later Tor Alex jumped it in 1998, but pulled after 5-6 seconds. From 2008 it is conidered as wingsuit exit even it have been tracked several times.

Hi Robin,

For sure it was an epic era for parachuting.....for all the inovators ...jumping from 1000m vertical walls with modified skydiving gear....I'm still not the person prepared to see people die Base Jumping....for this I couldn't believe that his wife in video, is so calm and is speaking after the accident (thanks 460 for clear this to me)...

I remember last year in our "dropzone" here in Greece,
in the safety day, the chief instructor showed us an Old video from USPA regarding the cooperation of Control towers - jumpships' pilots and skydivers for the smooth and safe airfield operation. I believe this is something very funny for USA today standars but in Greece, all the Control towers in airfields with skydiving activity, have only one mission......to keep skydivers and jumpships to the ground.
For this our Chief instructor showed us this video as in the Safety-Day were presented for the first time the chief of Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority and other high rank officers.

At the end of the video, I noticed that all skydiving footage was credited to Carl Boenish.....and I just wonder how many of the skydivers and other people
presented and watched the video....really known who was Carl Boenish???

okay, now we're clear: The site is shown, but no jumps rom that site are shown -- carl made the only jump from it (at that time) and as far as we know there is no film or photos of that jump (at least none that were ever circulated).

The witness at the top told he did trow his camera over the edge after he saw Carl go in.

The story below is just one story from the book Gorrilla Monsoon by John Long. It tells the true story of Carl Boenish’ fatal jump in Norway.

Carl posthumanously won the skydiver of the year award from the USPA. The only person to have done that. He was probably the biggest factor in bringing people into skydiving from his movies. Info courtesy of Rick Harrison.

Re: [460] Carl and Jean Boenish jumps from Trollwall in 1984, video
It wasn't the "Skydiver of the Year" which is a relatively new award. It was the "USPA Achievement Award" and that's the highest award they give out. I was at the event when the award was presented to Jean and Carl's family in San Diego. It was cool meeting Carl's Mother and I think I met his sister too. His family didn't call him Carl they called him Ronnie. We listened to Bags, B.J. and the rest of the USPA guys talk about Carl's skydiving movies, but BASE jumping was hardly mentioned. I spent most of the time sitting and holding Carl's last log book in my hands and thinking about the last time I saw him at Elsinore.
