check the skydiving rig, if it gets lost there is always someone around that can rent you a rig or loan you one...base rig is a bit more personal and harder to get if it gets lost

BASE rig.

It's cheaper to replace if it goes missing. It's got less stuff (reserve/spring/AAD) in there that is going to attract interest/get messed around with whilst you are not there.

If someone opens your reserve, unless you are a rigger, it's going to cost you and be a pain in the arse to get repacked.

Seeing as this hypothetical situation has one checking it at the last minute, it's unlikely it is going to be in a hard case so delicate components are likely to get damaged by rough handling/being left in the rain.

But then again hardcore BASE jumpers don't have AADs, do they?

The one which will suck less if lost.

Example: BASE vacation to big cliffs with a chartered helicopter. Check the skydiving rig.

Example: Skydiving boogie where I should get 50 jumps from planes. Check the BASE rig.

Example: Flying somewhere with stuff. Check the less expensive one (probably a BASE rig, unless the skydiving rig is my ancient J7) unless there's an upcoming event in the near future.

There was no option for neither, so I checked the third option.

Last time I flew with both, I had my base rig on my chest, and my skydiving rig on my back and checked my dirty laundry.

And yes, I did get pulled aside for additional questioning. Probably due to the fact that not only do I not have an AAD, but no reserve, either. I have replaced it with a decent bit of C4. That way, if I ever go in, there will be no trace that I messed up.

i bring both with me on the plane. you are allowed one carryon and one personal item. a packed base rig in a stuff sack is the same size-ish as a backpack, and your gearbag is a carryon item.

Exactly. They aren't even too enforcing on that either. I usually bring a huge army surplus bag with my rig, some clothes, and a sleeping bag in it as one carry-on, and either another rig or a backpack as another. I have only gotten shit once for taking up a whole overhead bin.

I just check both and skip the hassle. spending a few hours on layover sucks with more than the minimal.

for example: when ya gotta take a dump, do you take both rigs into the stall? or leave them "unattended?" how about dealling with food courts?

bag fees may force me to consider UPS a few days early!

i only fly first class, or at least business overseas, so i have all the room for as much carry on shit as i want.

but i don't travel with a skydiving rig. no use for that shit except at home when i'm bored. i travel with 2-3 BASE rigs instead.Smile

I think Ian was getting at the idea of which rig
would be better just in case the big flying tylenol
happens to fall out of the sky, ha ha.

Here is a better question!

Would you rather splat on the ground if the big flying tylenol goes down, or have only a slider down rig with a 52 inch PC?

So iv bin traveling around a bit
Being from NZ and traveling europe.
I bring both on as carry on, you just have to find the right suitcase.

I only once had issues (london to barcelona)
All i told them was you can put my rig in the hold but im broke and cant give you any cash and also, can you sign a waver saying that if im injured because something moved in my rig you will take all responsibility.

He just let me through after that.
