which way you do your brake?
Hi!

I can't find the answer... maybe you can help me?

How do you pass your toggle when you do your brakes?

What I want to know: When I jump slider up, I don't use the small white loop cord. I pass my togge directly into my shallow brake settings. When I jump slider down, I pass the small white loop cord into my deep brake settings and into the metal ring...

Anyway, thats how I learn to do it...

So what's the difference and why you do one way or the other?

By the way, I understand why we use deep brake or shallow... I just cant find the answer what can happen if you always use the small white loop cord??? what's the big deal???

Thank's for the info!!!

I have known people to use the white loop slider up. It just isn't necessary so most people dont bother.

As for slider down......People use it because you DO need it. (assuming you are jumping a line release mod when slider off)

OK that's what I tought... So no big deal if you use it slider up, it's just that you don't need it....

I guess that's what you saying

Re: [Halfpastniner] which way you do your brake?
I used to pass the white loop through the metal ring and put my toggle through the white loop as well. I would now highly recommend against it.

One jump off yellow ocean I pulled a bit low, popped my toggles, went straight to deep brakes and let my hands up fast like I usually do. One of my brake lines was freely moving but the other one was stuck because the little white loop had bunched up while still set through my brake line and I started a hard turn. Luckily the landing areas are huge in LB and I had time to reach up with the opposite hand above the ring to tug on the brake line and clear it. I landed without incident that time but it could have easily been a problem had the right set of obstacles presented themselves.

I wont be doing that again. Toggle tab through the brake setting in the brake line for slider up and that's it.

Thank's for the info! Now I know there is a reason!!!

you don't need the loop slider up because your line should already be running through the metal ring.

keep it simple.

I did a few packing classes at BD and I was shocked by how many people were insisting on using the white loop on slider up jumps. And by how many people I saw using a pullup cord to tie the lines together.

education is the key.

there is plenty of experience and knowledge out there. unfortunately, people are too hasty or stupid to utilize it.

i've found that a lack of gear knowledge/understanding is extremely common amongst newer jumpers.

If you want to keep it simple, you should always use the white loop....Crazy.

I said keep "it" simple, not be simple.
if you want to use it go for it. It's not my life, just my opinion.

Thanks for all the reply...

Actually, i Will continue the same way i'm doing it right now.... With the white loop when slider down and without with SU...

I'm just happy that i had an answer! When i was in lauterbrunen , I was asking other jumper... Look like everybody was doing it the same way but nobody new what was the problem if you use the small loop when slider up... The answer was more: because you dont need it. (actually good answer but i like to know the reason of things...!!!)

So thanks again!

what's wrong with tying the lines together at the bottom of the lineset with a pullup cord?

I have it on good authority that it's not a big deal.

why?

i have used it hundreads of jumps now, works fine. Im using deep brakes with the loop and no line mod in SD and SU allways. no problem, NORMAL :D

Honest. Am a bit confused or may be just need some clarification.
Was the loop so bunched up that it made a 'knot' keeping it attached to the rear? Whoa! I did get one like that but when skydiving, I popped out the toggles but one brake remained set and I got into a soon-to-be-violent spin. Got out clean after some correction though. Am bloody surprised, in fact scared that this might happen with such BASE canopies too. Well not because it is possible, but because its because of the white loop. Smile

Another point, correct me if I am wrong/stupid in thinking so, this brake-remaining-set is not possible for slider-down (ok, am talking about NO SLIDER at all) jumps because there is enough separation (and thereby separating force) between the brake lines and risers that the lines will simply come off clean once I grab the toggles. right?
Shortcut
Re: [3pin] which way you do your brake?
here, do a simple experiment. use the white loop to secure the toggle when the brake line goes through the retaining ring. now tension the riser somewhat and the lines moderately. now release the toggle and bring it down like a foot or two. Notice that the white loop is still going through the brake setting and the white loop is acting like a little stub against the top of the retaining ring. you won't have not effectively released the brake line yet because the canopy is flying in the brake setting. you have to pull down further than normal to clear it. otherwise, you will be puzzled as to why you have some lack of canopy control.

ah yea...

don't have my hands on my stuff at the moment, but can imagine this eventuality. I never use the white loop with slider up so was kinda hard to see this might happen. Thanks for that!
