Yosemite National Park Welcomes Oprah Winfrey for Camping and Flyfishing

Yosemite National Park has seen its fair share of high profile visitors—including the latest, Oprah Winfrey, who taped her travels to share with America. The daytime show will feature the first of a two-part chronicle on Friday, October 29, 2010, of Oprah and best friend Gayle King’s recent trip to Yosemite National Park. Like the Ken Burns film, The National Parks: America's Best Idea, Oprah will also feature Yosemite National Park Ranger Shelton Johnson—who was also interviewed for a National Parks article, “Expanding the Palette”, this past summer.

If previous travels are any indication, we should all be in for an entertaining ride—and one that highlights a national treasure, Yosemite! Visit the Oprah Winfrey Show website to find local viewing times and stations.

That's the thing. As has been pointed out recently in these forums, BASE is not likely to get legalized in national parks without some sort of popular support.

Is Oprah's show the ideal forum for showcasing BASE jumping? I'm sure most BASE jumpers would not think so but it is very difficult to dispute the fact that she reaches a large mainstream audience that would be difficult to reach in any other way.

Most in that audience probably view BASE jumpers as a lunatic fringe but a positive piece on Oprah's show might go a long way toward getting them to view BASE as a legitimate use of our national parks.

Isn't that what the BASE community wants?

You may be on to something here, Walt.

Actually, Oprah viewers celebrate all sorts of lunatic fringe and nut jobs, so BASE should match up well with the Oprah-demographic approval index.

She could even put a free forest-green ZP PC under every audience member's seat. I'm sure the tools would love that.

Cool

It is my humble opinion that Oprah is the best communicator in mainstream America. Oh by the way -she has the most power and influence (okay at least top 5), too. Just sayin'...

It's difficult to appreciate the beauty and magnitude of Yosemite without going there and seeing for yourself. Apparently she has done that.

Maybe, just maybe, it made enough of an impression on her that she might be interested in doing some follow-up segments.

I don't see it as a likely thing but as you said, you never know. I hope someone does try to contact her with the idea.

It's a sad world when people actually think oprah is the solution to the problem challenge with the NPS. Unsure

Re: [base570] Oprah in Yosemite
maybe if someone put together a promo video with jumps from Yosemite set to classical music and some landscape shots of the scenery there...and a jumper reading the Oprah magazine at the exit point.
