Just thought I'd try another unscientific attempt to see where attitudes currently stand.

If you like to jump in groups, party hard with other jumpers, and/or splash videos over the internet, please select the first option.

If you enjoy jumping for yourself, might even prefer solos's, and/or don't even have a camera, please select the second option.

I've struggled with this for a while. I prefer to be the unknown jumper without a number who does it for the love of the sport, not anything else.

But as more and more people pour into the sport, my desire to get a number grows as my chance to be in the BASE(less than 1000) has diminished and if I ever do decide to get a number, I'll be in the 50,000's.

It would be impressive that a person could keep such a secret..... I would be upset over missed jumps and experiences because I am a jumper.

Now if a jumper can keep Base a secret for non jumpers for a long period of time. That would be impressive and respected

It is natural human behavior to show off something you are proud off and good at! Expecting everyone to share your idea off what is the right way, is a bit to much demand. I understand where it comes from, and I was "mentored" the same way, since we had trouble to keep our skydive license if we where basejumping. All sports have a perfectly mix of different personalities, and there should be no reason to not appear in BASE also. In the old days base was special, today it is just another xtreme sport. Not a mainstream one, and will never be, just another one.

On a side note, as a base jumper you can be all you want at any time at different locations and objects.

I only wear t-shirts with pictures of me jumping. (Yuri Kouznetsov used to do this). I often have to see a chiropractor to deal with all the muscle strain of me constantly patting myself on the back. Have to go now, to admire myself in the mirror.

I don't see those as styles of jumping.

How about when you notice you watch and edit more video of yourself than anybody else...or when you get home from jumping the first task is uploading video to the internet (not opening a beer, packing, logging)...soon phones will have card reader slots for uploading straight from LZ to your social network site(s) (theyre like chips, you know you can't just have one site) so all your friends can more quickly see how Xtreme you are.

Why cant it be both? I would much rather jump in a group, i think its more fun and more relaxing, but that doesnt stop me from grabbing a rig when I get home from work and going out to do a quick solo.

As far as video goes it's also one of those things where "if it happens it happens." I've got cameras but dont always jump them, just depends on the situation. I'm not a big fan of posting raw vid of a jump. I do really enjoy editing however, so if there is a jump with multiple angles then sure, a lot of times i'll spend a few hours or more putting something together that i think people will enjoy and then share it.

obviously, I've given the two extremes of a spectrum. many will fall somewhere in between.

also, European vs US opinions may differ as well. many European jumps happen at legal sites. daytime video from a big wall tends to be so much better! (IMHO )

no single person, or organization, defines the "right way" to BASE. each jumper gets to make their own call. neither answer should be viewed inherently better than the other.

It looks to me like this poll is just like the majority of other posts out there, it's geared to create a discussion. So far you are the only person in this thread who has posted without contributing anything.

 

I think this issue with this poll is the options are too extreme. There seems to be a LOT of talk about old school base vs "new youtube generation" and i think thats the meaning behind the poll, and i believe that was the discussion it was meant to spur. Of course I could be wrong. (It does happen about once a year or so.)

You dont agree, no big deal, but no reason to post either.

Oh, and as far as polls from nonjumpers goes, i agree, however I have jumped with the person that created this poll.

personally, I'm surprised by the results, so far. with all the videos that get posted, with all the grumbling about the youTube generation, few people selected the option that supports videos!

as far as only 2 choices, it is a common tool in polls.
