V3 + BOC..?
Hey all,

Sorry if this has been covered, could not find anything using search.

Anyone jumping a V3 and using the BOC?

Difficult? Easy with practise... etc?

Thanks. Tom.

Done over 100 with leg pouch in Base. about 20 skydives with it in the BOC before i swapped to leg pouch. not difficult really but much slower to locate i found and much prefer leg pouch due to ease of location at pull time and speed.

I have upgraded from Prodigy 1 via Phantom 1 to my new V3 this summer.

Did several practice jumps of the plane with my legpouch as well as BOC. Figured out that - at least for me - BOC is much better.

I am used to it for almost 20 years of skydiving and 190+ BASE-jumps in total. Therefore it minimized for me the risk of being confused when switching back and for from skydiving to BASE and/or my other wingsuits and V3.

While using my V3 with the BOC setting I don´t try to find the PC directly. Typically I grip around the entire wing to the left side of the bottom of the container and follow it to the right side where I find immediately the PC.

This worked fine and I haven´t had any problem so far. However, one have to do practice jumps from the plane and start with this procedure in BASE at an appropriate hight - means, pull higher than "normal".

Hope this very personal experience helps for the decision making process. However, risk remains on your own shoulders!

Take care and have fun.

Can't see the need for using BOC; pouch gives easier and cleaner pull / deployment from full flight. I always do a few practice touches once I've put all my gear on, and a few more just prior to exit. I switch back to BOC when just in a tracking suit. I've not known anyone to forget the PC was in a pouch, but I know of people who have had to go for the pull more than once when their PC was BOC (dmkellet on this forum for one).

If you do use BOC, trick is to reach back and touch your fingers together before pulling back and grabbing the PC handle... but unless you have a really strong preference for doing this, I would always recommend using the pouch.

This has been discussed extensively before though.

Re: [freefall80] V3 + BOC..?
I started skydiving my V3 using BOC and never had any problems, I based BOC and also had no trouble but there was this one jump from a helicopter where I was using my Base rig, pulled below 1000 and the wing covered my BOC in a funnyway and twice i couldn't reach it, the third time I tried it worked and I had the scare of my life... So after this incident I have only been using the Pouch which is easy to reach, locate, pull from full flight, etc... I learned the hard way but luckily I am here telling the story. I don't recomend BOC on a V3 but that's just me.

Douggs is the most bad ass BASE jumper on the planet IMO and if it's possible for him to have trouble than it's possible for ANYONE to have trouble!

Go with the leg pouch. It's also my opinion now that if you do, then convert all wingsuits to a leg pouch. That way there is no confusion where the PC is. The muscle memory will become wingsuit-leg pouch, any other jump-BOC.

Just my thoughts after recently watching a friend die because of this, but I'm no expert

Re: [Lonnie] V3 + BOC..?
Douggs uses the base pouch, and I think he was using it during his "no pull find"

I have heard about a half-dozen stories of people using the base pouch and running into trouble, and a half-dozen stories of people using the BOC and running into trouble.

Big wingsuits are inherently more difficult to pull in and the only given is that you should pull high.

BOC for me tried both but BOC seems to be the Best Of the Choices available at this time. Pack your PC in a nice mushroom configuration so you have something nice to grip and you should be good to go. But bottom line I guess is if you are questioning which is the correct method for you; it is probably best you jump it both ways some more times and see what is right for you, just so long as you can get it out every time and on time it is all good.

That's the trick, how do you know you'll get it every time on time or not?
You'll know when you stop jumping or when you don't get it the first time, hopefully that first time isn't when you are tired, cold and low.

Practicing on skydives is a great idea, but skydiving is a different game altogether. The internet is a lousy place to get advice on this kind of thing. Everyone thinks what they do is the best way - maybe even the only way.

Ask some highly experienced wingsuit base jumpers that jump a Vampire for their opinion and the reasons behind it.

Also ask Robert (send him a PM or email) he designed the system and has hundreds of jumps on it. He understands the reasons it's there better than most.

Try and address your concerns over using each system and weight up the pros and cons objectively.

The fact that you are used to BOC should not factor into your decision. If Leg Pouch is what you decide to be the better system just take the time to retrain yourself to use it. It's not difficult.

Your deployment system is a very critical part of having a good day. Don't sacrifice it and ruin your day because you are too lazy to retrain yourself, winter is coming you have plenty of time to be ready for next season.

Re: V3 + BOC..?
Thanks for all the advice guys. Much appreciated.

The reason for the query was my V3 will be ready soon and whilst I know the BASE pouch is a very worth while thing on this suit, I was just interested in using the BOC as with BASE & skydiving together I have 3000 jumps using the BOC and so whilst not worried about retraining myself was just interested to hear opinions.

Thanks again all.

Tom.

I use V3 + BOC. Like you, I have a lot of skydives with the BOC. I have *never* had trouble reaching it.

I was afraid to change things up for BASE... My DZ doesn't allow BASE pouches, so I couldn't practice with a pouch prior to jumping it off a cliff.

I am more comfortable with the BOC, thus it's the better choice for me.

Your mileage may vary.

bottom line.... Robi is manufacturer. He knows best. He recommends pouch for a reason. I know this reason very intimately. for gods sake retrain yourself on pouch please....

I use the Slambo technique. It works pretty well.
