Updated Carnage Video
This is a touchy subject and I can foresee the arguments involved. Either way I still want to put this out there to hear opinions.

As the carnage video that circulated in prior years shows the deaths and injuries of many friends/family; why is there not another carnage updated carnage video? Should there be another carnage video?

Do you think it helped at all with curbing the appetite for BASE or served any other positive purpose? I know Tom showed it, at his FJC, even at bridge day (tom correct me if I am wrong). I am sure it ingrained images, and persuaded many people that this is not a joke...

Previously not many people jumped with first person video(not discounting those that did (Carl B, and all the others that did between then and now) but it was significantly less), nowadays it seems almost mandatory, more so even than kneepads or backprotectors to some jumpers.

As much as no one wants to see our friends hurt or killed; would it be beneficial at all to see how people fly themselves or become in situations in which there is only one outcome..could any lessons be learned from the videos?

Especially now that BASE is changing , specifically for those that are proximity flying; could it be helpful to see those sight pictures of what is the final quotient?

If anybody wonder how a dead body who impacted looks like, rotten.com is a great tool.

Personaly I do no see the purpose to have impacted close up friends on a video.

Re: [lowcountryBase] Updated Carnage Video
personally, I'd prefer a public collection of "near misses." ones similar to the recent tension knot video where the jumper spirals in next to a huge leg busting rock.

no need to have the blood and gore to sober people up. just show situations that drained someone's luck bucket.

Re: [wwarped] Updated Carnage Video
i agree i dont want to see the first person view videos of my friends going in, however the video of "near misses" and close calls are a wake up call and a sign to stop doing stupid sh*t. I also think its good for beginners to see these videos and to understand the reality of base jumping things can and do go wrong especially when your balls and your ego get too big.

well i now know doing a WS Rodeo off the KL Tower isnt a good idea! however there was some good stuff people don't mention, the geezer who was flying the yellow and black tony suit was impressive!!

Does one think that ones actions are stupid or dumb before the act?
Think about it.

What do you mean, which idea?
Subterminal winging it with a rider? That is totally idiotic when one THINKs about it if one knows about subterm stuff. Maybe the guy just aint a thinker. That stuff needs to be on the "front" of the mind. Otherwise just get a group together and show him Andre Karr“s tree smacking proxy video and egg him on that he could do more spectacular, get him out of the way for the progress of the sport. Or maybe he might redefine what is possible. Or maybe redefine what is impossible. Either way, I see him as a great example in the making. Youtube rox dude lol.

i meant in general (not necessarily what tom did), doing a WS Rodeo subterminal i agree was totally a spectacular stupid decision and i wonder what was going through his mind at the exit point. Its a shame he hasnt commented on any of these posts....

Re: [jamie-the-para] Updated Carnage Video
what about the other people at the exit point? didn't someone see it and think, WTF?

it is not up to event management, it is up to the collective group. IIRC, #102 was told by event management NO aerials. he still did one, as well as his jump companion.

each person must decide if they will be quiet when they see stupid stuff, or speak up. waiting for someone else to say or do something tends to fail.

Re: [wwarped] Updated Carnage Video
I thought wingsuiting from the tower was a bad idea and just another pointless 'look at me' jump. Then a dude flew safely past the water tank, pulled at a decent height and landed well, then went on to repeat that a few times. It didn't seem so stupid then.
When Tom stepped up to do the WS rodeo, I wanted to say something as I figured he had almost no chance of pulling it off but decided not to as I had been proved wrong earlier.

Here it is the right answer.
No matter the carnage, no matter the dead friends, youtube generation only commitment is to be looket at.

It's lack of proper education, and above all luck of proper mentor as example to follow.

Re: [Ronald] Updated Carnage Video
Since a couple of days I intensively search for accident or near-accident videos and reports because I am thinking about starting wing suit flying. I want to learn what I can before I make a decision. I want to be as aware as possible of all the risks. And I want to know in which ways adverse circumstances and errors can accumulate to result in disaster, especially in experienced people. Of course I do not need close-ups of fresh corpses to achieve this but they don't disturb me either. I have seen enough (not so fresh) corpses in reality so I am relatively indifferent to such.

I do not tend to be scared away easily, the point is not to stop myself from picking up yet another dangerous and expensive hobby. I did the same kind of research before I started diving in caves. It didn't stop me from doing it, but it helped me to appreciate emergency drills and to stay risk aware even when being slightly intoxicated by breathing air at 40msw.

I often remember a clip which shows entanglement and subsequent death of a diver trying to lift a corpse from a sub 100msw cave. It's scary and for many people it may cause nightmares. But nobody forces anyone to watch it, just as nobody forces us to do our risky stuff. Today I understand exactly what happend, why it went wrong and how it could have been prevented (in this case).

I want to reach the same level of understanding in Wing Suit flying and BASE jumping. I want to learn how to avoid risks and why I should do certain drills / take certain security measures. I therefore plead for releasing such terrible clips. You may hurt the feelings of some people but at the same time save the life of others.
