Re: [_cuzucan_] Online petition to legalize jumping in national parks
I will start off by saying, I'd like the NP's to be open to jumping.
BUT I doubt I will sign the petition. It is a rather lousy and counterproductive idea, IMHO.
the hard part is NOT getting the parks to re-open to jumping, it will be to MAINTAIN the right. fighting jumping seems embedded into the culture. even if the regulations change, many rangers will jump at the chance to shut it down again.
look at the last protest jump, that ended with a fatality. anyone think that ended up helping or hardening?
look at the recent reckless acts at the KL event. look at all the fatalities at the Norwegian cliff. any of these incidents will arm the rangers with ammunition to stop jumping, again.
if it would get shut down, again, it might turn into a long, harsh winter. the current status quo could seem rather nice.
sure, tasering is out of control, irresponsible, and unwarranted.
then again, so is developing your rodeo wingsuit technique at a low, urban object with exceptionally high visibility.
if we ever must worry about keeping the NP's open, we must learn how to restrain ourselves.
as always, I could be wrong...
ps
just look at the cliff involved in the urine drinking debacle. wasn't that site once reasonably jumper friendly (heliboogie)? it changed. how about the Mexican Cave? if we can't keep these sites open, we will never keep the NP's open.
