Three ring defect?
I got this (almost) new rig the other day with 3 jumps on it. I was packing, and noticed the 3 rings seemed a bit off. As you can see in the picture, the first ring of the riser does not sit where it should on the fabric of the second ring. Even when the white loop is fully tensioned upward, it still does not sit right.

Therefore, when loaded, the middle ring would push against the top ring, and my concern is that it could possibly cause an unintentional cutaway.

Any thoughts? or is the pressure of the middle ring pushing against the top ring the same as if it were resting on the fabric?

Re: [cheekybastard] Three ring defect?

Booth is very adiment about the geometry of the rings and there spaceing. He feels that they should be built tight so that under maximum load the riser will streatch into "proper" alinement. He's been an advicat of this for years and builds his risers "tight" simular to what you see there. Others build them a little "louser" and still others are just tired of argueing with him. Haveing said all this is does look a little tight to me but I build mine a bit loser then booth does any way. Call them up and get them to send you a pic of the over lap on their rings so you can compare them if it makes you feel better.

The picture needs to be under load to be of use. Hook it on something and hang on it.

Also

Take a picture of it disassembled, laid out flat with the rings pulled down completely. You may need to have it taken while puling them down so we can see how they sit and where the stitching is. Don't hide the white loop, or the grommet tab.

I read your thread on dz.com. Just so you know, many of them do not have a clue about base risers and all you have to do is be somewhat civil and we'll help. You're doing great on that site Laugh

What brand of risers are those?

Those are standard rings so the geometry has to be way off to matter. Also, you never have to cutaway from a violent malfunction.

Edit: I just looked back at the thread and the fun posts have been removed or hidden. :)

Still take the picture laid out flat and one under a load.

Re: [hookitt] Three ring defect?
Yep, pic. needs to be in a strait-pull on the Riser 3-rings & ( I think ? ) stated tolerances of 3-ring built to Strong specs. is like 1/16th" +/- on construction .

When assembled right I think technically that it only takes like 3 to 4-Lbs. pressure at the max. put on the Loop that is coming-out & above the small-ring .
With no cable lock going there it . You can ( theoretically ) (believe it or Not) hold it all together by just finger pressure holding against the loops on a Free-Fall opening shock.
Very little pressure needed to keep the 3-ring all together when drop-load in the harness ,( when all is done right) .
(myself) - I was put in a hanging harness and dropped once and just by my finger pressure pushing against the both Loops, with the cables out . When dropped, there was no cutaway on the 3-rings. BUT I was only jumping off a table & not in Free fall .
