BASE Beginners

Hello
Hey everyone,

I'm Matt. I really just wanted to make an account here to say hey and lurk around. Plus all the base jumpers at the dz hate me cause at the end of the day I hover over them and pester them with questions while they pack Tongue. So maybe some of my questions can be answered on here.

I know "blue skies" is probably unacceptable around here so I'll just end with "thanks and see ya around." Sly

Oh and I just ordered a new toy (Phantom2) so I'm pretty excited to get it and start playing with it. Which reminds me of a quick question I had. Is the leg cutaway option worth purchasing? I got mixed responses at the dz and on dz.com.

I can't think of any situation where I'd use it. A P2 leg wing is so damn wide you can almost sprint in it. Landing one with the leg wing done up is hardly any different to landing one with it undone.

TBH you rarely see a leg cutaway even on the bigger suits these days. Seems like just a throwback to the very narrow wings of the Skyflyer and S-3, really.

Re: [jakee] Hello
Thanks for the reply. Yeah I couldn't really find much on PF suits leg cutaway. Most of the threads on dz.com mentioned that the LQRS is great for kicking out of linetwists fast, but no one ever discussed PF suits and I guess now I know why.

Re: [volmatt] Hello
Kicking out of line twists, landing etc are all fine with the large Phantom leg wing.

I optioned mine with the cutaway for emergency water landings, tree landings or any other unforeseen situation where I need out quickly.
Even if I never use it, its better than regretting that extra 70 euros while I'm drowning in a Fjord somewhere

Re: [Weightless] Hello
So do you generally not have time or opt not to unzip your legs on WS jumps?
Shortcut
Re: [volmatt] Hello
I guess that would depends on the suit, your heading and most importantly on pull height.

If you pull high enough, you can probably unzip your legs and chill out, but I'm not sure of the time you'd have on a WS jump.
I don't have any experience pulling at the heights in question, so I don't really know intuitively, but I'd imagine that pointing your canopy towards the landing area usually takes precedence over unzipping your legs.

Re: [ThePirate] Hello
Yeah I guess I'd prefer putting it down in the landing area all zipped up over landing in a Fjord unzipped and ready to swim. Tongue

But anyway it sounds like the cutaway system draws mixed responses here as well. I can definitely see Weightless's point about not wanting to be in a situation regretting not spending the money (like AADs if you guys remember what those are Wink), and I kinda wish I had shelled out the extra cash to get it. Oh well if I ever take a dip in a river and survive, I'll let you guys know how hard it is to swim.

Re: [volmatt] Hello
I really can't see why anybody would object... Maybe there's something I'm missing, but to have the option is probably worth €70.

Re: [ThePirate] Hello
Well an emergency landing situation never really crossed my mind as I always figured 2500 feet is more than enough to unzip my wing. And most people with P2s at the dropzone don't have the cutaway. Looking back, I wish I had gotten it, but I'll probably never fly off an object so hopefully I'll never need it.

As skydiving goes, you're probably right.
But you never know what you'll be jumping from in a few years. Tongue

Re: [ThePirate] Hello
Haha very true. Who knows what I'll be doing a few years down the road.

Got another question too if ya don't mind. I've been looking through the gear section a bit, and I noticed that most canopies I saw are recommended for either terminal or low objects but generally not both. So do most people have a "Europe rig" and a "barely jumpable A" rig or do they just switch out the canopies for different objects? Or are there versatile canopies that work well for all objects?
Shortcut
Re: [volmatt] Hello
I have no idea. But from what I've read and heard, people seem to be oriented towards one type or the other.

I'm sure that you can find a canopy that works reasonably well for both, but chances are that you'll be leaning towards a certain type of jump.

Hello Pirate,

This forum is for beginners looking for advice. Even if you are qualifying your replies with "as far as i know" or "from what I hear" you are giving incorrect information in some of your posts. I assume you have zero base jumps?

I respectfully suggest reading more and replying to other beginners requests less until you have more experience and knowledge to share, otherwise it's just adding noise.

To the Original Poster, there are many canopies that are suitable for delays all the way from less than 1 second to terminal tracking \ wingsuiting delays. In recent years there have been a few slider up \ slider down specific canopies but these are probably not the best option for a first canopy. The manufacturers will be happy to discuss which canopy is best for your needs.

Take care.

Re: [LukeH] Hello
Thanks for the info. Yeah when the time comes I'll definitely do some serious research and ask jumpers I know instead of anonymous people on the Internet. I was asking purely out of curiosity and not to make a decision on purchasing anything.
