Austrian jumper Gerald Leberl had the idea to make a record BASE jump to raise awareness of UN International Peace day (aka World Peace Day) the 21st of September.

So he put together a team of 21 jumpers to meet at the ITW to break the existing 11 way record.

The weather was against the attempt and had to be rescheduled twice. Many of the original team were unable to make the 3rd attempt so it took some luck and determination to find enough jumpers.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the project, especially those who couldn't make the final attempt, thank you for taking time to come to ITW as your support was appreciated.

The jump is dedicated to Will Heidelbrecht, who sadly passed away in Lauterbrunnen just after the record.

As the air space at ITW is not best suited to a simultaneous launch a 4 wave exit was chosen, with everyone being in freefall together (13 trackers and 8 ws).

I am almost in 100% agreement with your post and the link you have provided gives great insight into the event. But somehow it doesnt convey your statement in the shift of BASE ethics. Contact the locals. Sort it out with them. Where is the discrepancy? My issue with the previous was lack of preparedness/practice/talent. These present jumpers did prepare and practice, not to mention that the technology and skill level to use it has went way up in the past 5 yrs making things more possible.
As for your statement about records. Isnt that what records are about? doing risky stuff and not dying? Put your research hat on and find an example of death in a record attempt screwing up access to a sport locale and educate us. Also it would be nice if you state your jump experience to your speculation.
Please dont take this as put off but rather to put some weight behind your words. Also, if you havent already jumped at ITW, it would be nice for you to see it. I hear tell the best view is in FF.

i have organized that jump becouse i liked the idea of peace one day.
i have also already made a project and collectet over 100 000 euro for people in india and africa who do not have a bit of a chance for a better life...
at least i try to make a better world...

that jump rocked! i loved the video, excellent camera angles, and it makes your heart skip a beat to see all these bodies hurling themselves off the exit point. it did get kinda sappy at the end, but then you can always edit that part out : )

The end result of the outrage 4 years ago from that link was actually good, despite being driven by inflated egos from all sides. The end result was this strong message to BASErs around the world: don't bring you fucking big ways and other stupid shit to this beautiful little garden. Let's take care of this garden together. Let's go long, not hard.

As far as I understand from following that drama at that time, Russians understood, and turned the whole situation into a friendly laugh and even made a special T-shirt for you, "Did you ask Tracy?!" with Mother Russia launching wingsuits like rockets.

Now, this 21-way precedent opens the doors for making ITW an international megazoo where bodies will be falling from the cliff like poop out of C-130's on big way records every other good day. There will be a 13-way world record of jumpers with inflatable crocodiles commemorating that crocodile hunter from Australia, 10-way linked 2-point headdown of windtunnel rats all jazzed up after watching that Soul Flyers headdown footage from Norway, 100-way Grid of wingsuits proxying the wall in mattresses while bending the legs at 45 degrees, and 25-way unpacked jump that will assemble a 5x5 CRW diamond.

The videos produced by these teams will be all somewhat different in the beginning: they may start with a footage of atomic bomb explosion, or gay parade, or Martin Luther King saying "I had a dream", or Mussolini standing on a balcony, or starved kids from Africa with flies over them, or John Lennon in bed with Yoko. They will all have their "good cause".

But they will all have very similar ending: some old farts from some bureaucratic organization overlaid with a romantic saxophone tunes.

Oh, and the amount of overall preparedness/practice/talent now is much higher than 5 years ago. And they will contact the locals. And what would you say then? And if locals disagree, some will do it anyway. And the chance of something going wrong on N-way is not just linear N-fold higher, but more like NxN-fold higher.

BASE is growing fast, but resources are not growing at all. At least, some "children playgrounds, flower gardens" should be respected more than just some random sites.

Yes Im critical of your "behaviour" and it must be discussed publicly.

I think you should resign from "boss of the ITW" position, or, if there are no other candidates for the job you should kick yourself and start working.

As it was expressed better by others organizing multiway is the last thing this site and especially our sport needs. In eyes of the wuffos thats nothing more than 20 moronic adrenalin junkies jumping together.

Here are some of my ideas what can be done there to present our activity as a serious sport, make it a part of local turism, attraction and to make jumping safer. I think thats the only way to keep the site legal no mather the accidents, local elections or other variables.

1. every sport needs competitions. Instead of "record multiway" you could organize WBR type of speed competiton, gps supported full glide ws and tracking, target, best video, best video combined with other sport (like nissan outdoor games), aerials with paralel camera,...

2. Open door day. Invite local people and turists to visit the landing area ot maybe even the exi to watch and talk to jumpers.

3. Rewrite the "ITW rules". In some points they look like a joke. Install these rules on a board near the bar or at the packing area where wuffos can see that we are organized. Other notifications regarding site issues, weather, classifieds, money raisings, what to do in case od an accident,...... could be presented on this board.

4. Meteo station as it is is of no big help. Around here every main paraglider start has a meteo station with automatic answering machine reporting wind speeds and direction. Over and over we are in situation where we are jumping in high winds or not jumping beacuse of high winds at the exit while on landing everything is calm.

5. Also it is obvoius that a site and sport needs some sort of first jump and/or introductiory course (kjerag type). I also follow the italian forum and I noticed that the beginners are a problem.
I still dont know why you tried to discredit and mine the idea of the guy with the "storm clouds over ITW" thread?

6. Transportation?! Because the transportation is not solved jumpers without drivers are making unnecesarry double driving (once for the jump and once for the car) up and annoying locals up there.

7. Speed reduction and zebra between landing and parking.

Maybe somebody else has some other ideas.

Send me a PM or otherwise go to Verona DZ and they will have most things you request. IMHO it seems that you do not know what we have achieved with the Gov there or what they denied us. I will try to address each of your challenges publicly. If you want to put more effort into this than the locals (me included), then do so. We have worked hard and are welcome to introductory new ideas. That being said, 6 out of your 7 ideas have been approached AFAIK.

#7. Speed reduction and zebra between landing and parking.
You are dealing with with so many divisions of government here.
Department of District,
Department of State,
Department of Traffic Safety,
Department of Tourism,
Department of Ecology,
Department of Transportation
etc.
When was the last time you´ve had heard of a pedestrian, climber, spectator, BASEr getting hit by a car on this stretch of highway as compared to traffic accidents all together. Take this as task number one.
Not to mention that the main LZ is off limits to any developments due to it being a protected area (that includes it being a designated landing area). and the parking and packing area is private. The meteo station you say is of no big help? I think it was almost 1 year to get permits to erect it. Maybe because this is one of the most phenomenal Valleys in the Alps (Longest north/south glacial with a huge lake at the lower end). Maybe a 1000m antennae with anemometers every 250m would be sufficient to define wind direction/velocity would work. You could tie it in like those German Ampleman traffic lights to show when it is allowed to cross the road. You know, get to the exit point and wait for the greenman light to light up. but you could through in another column for state of dress. Wing suit green, Trackers yellow and without a clue red.. Ahhhh sounds so simple.. Your answer lies in your very statement . If you are jumping in high winds..... duh. Blaming on anyone else sounds not so clever. I personally never jump in winds I do not understand because I am not good enough. but to each his/her own. Also, I cannot believe you didnt mention where there are no winds on the exit point and the Ora wind is kicking ass at 25-30 mph (40-48kmh) at the LZ (this is mostly normal at very regular times during the day during "fair weather days", Actually "Ora" means "punctual". A punctual wind so to speak. Same wind, Same time, different day. Hint, clocks work better than anemometers sometimes. What about tri or quad level winds? 3 or 4 different level winds 90° out from each?
Work on it. Speak with us locals. Let us know. I promise that you will be listened to. Sorry to sound so hard you. But we have worked on this for 10+ years. Some things are in the works wishing well as always.

allegorical story: At one engineering firm I worked with, there was a Physicist that always proposed every negative effect of any idea I had and why it would not work therefore. So I learned how to use this as a tool and designed some cool stuff that worked quite well.
