I am writing this to everyone that thinks they are ready to base. I am currently writing this on my couch where i will be for sitting/laying down for the next 8 weeks maybe longer do to a base injury. I have around 800 skydives and 80ish base jumps and just had a shitty landing one night. The result was a shattered foot that they had to reconstruct and i also cracked my t12 in my spin.

As i result to this jump I lost my job and I have to rely on my girlfriend, family and friends to help me move around. I'm not going to sit here and tell you how dangerous base jumping is or any of that crap. But I will tell is you the things that you really need think about is how it is going to effect others mentally and financially.

As someone interested in BASE I thank you very much for your post but I am sorry you lost your job. One thing I tend to admittedly neglect when making decisions is the impact on my family,college, and a future career so I sincerely thank you for the reminder. I tend to think the logistics through regarding reaching my goal and I understand that I could die but one thing I tend to neglect are scenarios I don't die. I have done this with snowboarding,mountain boarding, and a few other sports but I forget that even if injured I wasn't doing anything illegal. I checked out the articles sections and the forums a bit but failed to find any thread like this. I am not trying to hijack your post but if other jumpers had stories like this they would be willing to share they are very much appreciated. I have read the "Incidents" thread but they generally just cover what happened,how it happened, and how to prevent it in the future and the "In Memory of" thread which is always a good reminder but doesn't really discuss nonfatal scenarios. Again not trying to hijack your thread friend just trying to get more stories like yours to aid me in making a decision.

what kind of work did you do?

most of the long time jumpers i've known had desk jobs like computer programming. it was easy for them to work despite any injuries.

when i shattered my femur, unfortunately i didn't have anyone to help in the town i was in. i had to go it alone.

Well I worked front desk st the Hotel that we jumped from.

Me and Chris got fucked up on the same night on other sides of the country, i think this was my 188th jump, almost made it to 200 unscathed.

Like you (and no doubt others), I lost my job after getting injured (Im an accountant). I was out of work for a year (on crutches for 10 months), and it took several more years to pay back the debt.

Hope your situation goes smooth mucker...

yeah, who says BASE jumping is cheap?!?! i've spent a fortune on medical bills and gas for my vehicle. shattered femur, broken tailbone, broken ankle, 2 snake bits, one large razor wire slice to my forearm, two broken ribs, all in different incidents.

Man, I love national healthcare.

I have to ask, though. We most of these because of dodgy landings/landing areas?

I am actually pretty delighted about the health care changes that will occur tomorrow. Being dropped from insurance because of an injury sucks.

bones next to a lot of muscle heal a lot better. thus, ankle injuries and foot injuries can be more long lasting.

* One malfunction resulting in a very low opening and screwed up the landing to the point it nearly killed me, shattering the femur.

* one dodgy landing area in gusty winds broke the tailbone due to a tree trunk strike. canopy lines got caught on tree and I lost control of the canopy.

* two hard openings - broke a rib on each

* fence issue broke the ankle. broke the ankle when I landed (even did a PLF) on a weird surface after jumping from a 8 foot tall fence.

What was the malfunction that gave you the low opening? And what lessons did you take away from your other injuries? Not criticizing you, just want to learn what not to do. My health is pretty important to me, and it'd kill me to be maimed. It's what gives me the most pause.

Absolutely. Like the time i jumped a 120 foot span, stowed, 42", while encapsulated completely in an iron maiden (luckily without spikes lining the interior). I couldnt move inside the fuckin thing, and pounded into the water still stowed. Totally avoidable had i chose the right armour.

Met this dude at a DZ, Doing a 6 way hybrid. Okay. He asks me if I can arch. I said...well yes.. thats how I learned skydiving. :-P. He said...okay good, so you be here, I be here, I cannot arch, I got steel all over my back. :-O. Just another BASE jumper doing some fun jumps.

Thanks guys for all the ugly reminders that BASE will/might really fuck ones base sometime in the career. Better to be jumping out of ones residing country so that IHP Bupa Travel Insurance and the likes can cover the medical bills :-P
