I have no idea where, when or who, just found it on youtube.

It popped up back in June or July. Here's the guys website linked from youtube. It says he lives in France.

It is on the same side of the valley.

Re: [434] Wallstrike!!
Looks like he pulled whilst still banking to the left which left him with the multiple line twists. Not sure why he did that!

Re: [Pendragon] Wallstrike!!
IMO, when you get a bunch of twists that low to the risers it is because you didn't get a quick snatch and line stretch. It isn't because your canopy just did 5 360's.

Steph Davis has a great video of the same thing happening to her. She handled it very well.

I have seen this happen on skydives with a very short pilot chute hesitation. A terminal burble is a huge turbulent mess. If a D bag lifts up five feet and then comes down and bounces off your back, the same thing happens.

So make sure you get the PC out in some clean air.

Re: [BASE104] Wallstrike!!
With line twists I really wonder if at all it is possible to reach up above the twists and steer away. (never had any on BASE. Skydiving yes, but I just kicked out.) From this current video, it just seems too far up to even try that. Got a link to Steph's video by any chance? or at least what exactly she did?

and it's just so eerie that, the canopy starts turning but stops when its facing the wall and flies STRAIGHT into the wall. only if it were facing otherwise, he probably would have kicked out of it..
Shortcut
Re: [3pin] Wallstrike!!
Yeah, that is what Steph did. I was impressed.

But that dude would have had to have 6 foot arms to take care of that mess.

Go to FB, type in Steph Davis, "Like" her, and then scroll down to this long "Children of the Sky" video. It is the very first jump.

Good thing she pulls kinda high and all that. But she never freaked out. Just dealt with it.

If you think, you stink.

OK. I am pretty sure that this one shows Steph dealing with the EXACT same thing. Twists down low to the risers. Watch her eyeballs. She deals with it and doesn't freak out. In her case she was able to sort out the risers and pull on them through the twists.

You don't usually see twists this low at the DZ, though. Once I did a slider down jump and had a 180 at the risers. Nearly cut my ears off. Bleed like a stuck pig and had to go get some stitches. No helmet.
Shortcut
Re: [BASE104] Wallstrike!!
Actually, I would go so far as to say that getting this many twists that low down is a very weird problem.

You can have a decent skydiving rig and make a thousand jumps with zero twists at the DZ, packing in three minutes. I don't think the cause was a low shoulder. Not when it comes to line twists of this magnitude.

So I am curious how often this is happening on terminal jumps.
Shortcut
Re: [BASE104] Wallstrike!!
The reason for massive twists when pulling during wingsuit turn is not just that one shoulder is low. It's that the PC is "anchored" to the side of your arc trajectory by the time you reach the initial stage of inflation (i.e. if you're turning right, PC will be pulling canopy to your left side at some angle). These 2 factors result in you hitting one loaded riser with your shoulder, and only after noticeable delay, you hit the second riser. This puts your body in rapid spin.

In both cases of jimstar and Steph, the pull in a turn was not necessary. The lesson we can take from this is, plan your flight so that you can pull in straight flight with generous object separation and at generous altitude. Don't be proximity greedy, pulling in the beginning of the peel-off when you ran out of altitude. Or don't do the unnecessary turn towards LZ smoking it low when you can pull from straight flight instead and easily reach it under canopy.

THINK so they won't find your stinking shit when they come to scrape your remains off the wall! Wink

Re: [Lokky_luke] Wallstrike!!
Well, I think that wingsuit flights probably have a far more unusual "burble" than a simple falling lump.

I suspect that there are vortices rolling in from both exterior tips. Airplanes have them, although not so badly. They just increase drag, which is why you see modern airliners with whitcomb winglets.

I would love to see a wingsuit in a wind tunnel. There would be no need for a live person to be inside it, but I would guess that there are these vortices coming up from the wingtips and then rolling into the back. And you would trail them for quite a ways. It would take a hell of a lot of smoke to see them in flight if they do exist.

Just an educated guess.

Check out "Line twists" on DZ.com. Lots to learn. It took me 7secs to get out of twists on my twist and shout jump from a cliff..
Lot to to be learned.
Trying to figure out the best way. Any help would be cool.
Take care,

Re: [BASE104] Wallstrike!!
Thanks for the link, Base 104, Appreciate that.

That is some cool-headed handling there. Pulling high helped too. But guess she was in a better position because she could steer through the twists. Not always possible I reckon. But good to see and learn what she did.

Just making it clicky http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z26jrvFfTWI

Any tips on how to get some solid drills on twists? I really do not want to do something like packing twists on safer objects like Perrine and do the actual jumps. How about making a simulator? Some experienced jumpers tell me, if need be, one really has to climb up the twists in order to reach the lines above them and steer away. I accepted that because its possible to do but certainly not sure if its doable in a low object jump. In the current case, I would think if he had pulled himself up with one hand, and steered away with the other may be....may be asking for some herculean strength Tongue It is certainly easier to say.

I would love to see the video of someone climbing up the lines. Anyone? I'm sure with this technique, fixing tension knots, lineovers, PC-unders and forgotten daisy-chaining is simply a matter of climbing up a bit more. Angelic

Preferrably, in wingsuit, please. Laugh

Re: [yuri_base] Wallstrike!!
haha....see it's easy and a solution to many problems like those you mentioned, isn't it? Tongue Smile

well, it makes me more curious about its feasibility now. I took that from them because, I imagined it would be like pulling yourself up a tight rope using both hands, and then holding on with one, and use the other to steer. That is already sounding like some Hollywood hero's way of doing it. Cool

Will try to do that in my hammock whenever I get a chance. certainly not a realistic feel that will be but at least I will get some answers to my doubts about the heroic rescue method they talk about.

am not getting into WS so may be someone else can try that and share the experience Tongue

edited to add the illustration ...

Re: [Boris73] Wallstrike!!
Line twists are a nightmare. I will do some work on the air flow over a wingsuit, which you know is moving forward rapidly, but also descending rapidly. Ever seen a fighter plane pull up like crazy? Kind of a similar situation. The entire top of the plane can go white with condensation, due to a drop in pressure.

I think this is super important. You should be trailing two huge vortices that roll up over the wings and down onto your back. And they should trail you for hundreds of feet.

I just know that I have gone for a thousand jumps straight on skydives with zero twists. Then I am seeing these things.

Re: [BASE104] Wallstrike!!
I remember seeing a documentary loooong time back when some pros were testing a suit and they got into a military(I think) wind tunnel and he actually donned the suit to test it. Of course he was tethered at numerous points on his body :-). The following analysis was pretty cool albeit a bit too heavy on my brain.

on a previous note...

whew! that's nightmarish. The most nasty I got when skydiving was on a Sabre 2 with the line twists(starting from the risers) on my neck. Without the ear covering helmet, I am sure I would have ripped off at least one. Now I wonder if I would be able to climb up with on that kind of twists Crazy

That was the best reaction, after landing, of any of the videos on this thread, along with calling the PLF. Nice work buddy.

How ever Steph Davis, putting her glasses back on only after snatching the toggles. Style point are high as well.

Re: [zmorlock] Wallstrike!!
This is seriously the lamest thread I have ever seen. What are you guys even talking about???
To start, this vid wasn't a wall strike. Dude landed on a vegetated hillside, and stayed put.
Are you guys really talking about what to do when you have line twists? The answer is simple: Deal with it. Obviously.
On a side note: y'all need to stop S-ing Steph's D. She's a cool chick for sure, but I don't know that "the look in her eye's" need's to be noted. Or to say "she didn't freak out at all" for that matter. What'd you expect to see. Screaming and Tears???

We are talking about how Sen Bernie Sanders' thoughts can help America get out of the line twists they are in.

Exactly! Both didn't even try to steer canopy. If the guy that missed the powerlines his canopy was flying towards the lines he would have flown in. Look at his hands grabbing in middle of twists with bent arm. He would have reached easily above twists.
Pulling a little bit higher gives you time to undo the twists and to miss the powerlines in a controlled way!

I correct that for you :
Pulling a bit lower mean you didn't fly long enough to go in the power lines

Dude.

You are all wrong on my take on Steph. Hell, she had a problem. She dealt with it. That is what you do.

And yeah, she has been very cool in my contacts with her. I started out as a Yosemite dirtbag climber, and the climbers getting into it now are kind of my heros. Same thing happened to me. Killed my climbing life. Down the bunny hole. Of course it happened to me back in the eighties.
