Out of plain bewilderment, I'll have to second this.

Respect. It's hard to explain, but the reasons I have mean a lot to me and have nothing to due with this thread about remembering Leroy. I miss ya Leroy, fly free brother.

So out of respect for someone who you (and others) admitted to have an unacceptable level of risk taking you would rather shut up instead of leaving things out in the open and making sure those who are alive don't take stupid risks ?

I doubt anybody who is in their grave due to making stupid decisions really cares what people think about them, or minds that people learn from their mistakes. But hey, I am sure Dorkzonehero can say this in a much better phrased mini-essay :)

I prefer to harden the fuck up and take off the pink sunglasses when dealing with reality :)

Aside from the fact that 99.9999 percent of the people in the world think BASE jumping of any kind is both a) "an unacceptable level of risk taking" and b) "tak(ing) stupid risks," I was wondering: Just what part of the word "respect" do you not understand?

respect: vt. 1. a) to feel or show honor or esteem for; hold in high regard b) to consider or treat with deference or dutiful regard 2. to show consideration for; avoid intruding upon or interfering with ( to respect others' privacy ) -- n. 1. a feeling of high regard, honor or esteem 2. a state of being held in honor or esteem 3. deference or dutiful regard 4. consideration; courteous regard

this thread hijack is not really appropriate for a BSBD thread. PM me if you folks want it split off so you can continue it elsewhere.

sorry, that wasn't my intent -- i just thought vid666 was: a) making silly suppositions about what constitutes "unacceptable risk taking" and "stupid risks" and i thought he was way out of line for baggin on racha for deleting his posts out of respect for the dead guy.

there is in most other communities a little thing called respect for the dead and not speaking ill of the dead and i thought it was commendable of racha to act in concert with that long established tradition.

and, you know, i think it's ridiculously obvious that in almost all mortal sports and pastimes, people die because they did something stupid. the streets of edwards air force base, for example, are mostly named after brilliant test pilots whose last official act was something stupid.

everybody who does anything dangerous or not does stupid things periodically or serially because we're human and it's our nature. it's just that when speed and altitude are involved, stupid hurts more and is often fatal.

Of course, now that i've written all of this blah-blah, it occurs to me that maybe you weren't talking specifically to me at all because here we all are acting as if this is the INCIDENTS thread, and not an "in memory of" thread.

D'OH!

So yeah, all the bad-mouthing and bone-picking should in fact get shifted to the Incidents forum because this forum is supposed to be for saying NICE things about the dead guy, and from the few on this thread who have observed that, my thanks; I never knew Leroy, but he sounds like one of those larger than life outrageous dudes whom it would have been a pleasure to know and watch in action, though maybe not to ask for risk management advice.

Re: [robinheid] Leroy DB
yawn...

I urge people to harden the fuck up. Respecting the dead by hiding errors in their judgment is the same as disrespecting the living.

I always thought of BASE jumpers, (and even some skydivers Sly) as tough folks. Desensitized, able to separate societal expectation from the cold hard reality. Respecting the dead may be a mainstream tradition, but does that mean we should build monuments to Adolf Hitler now that he is diseased ?

I do agree that lots of these posts need to be spit off in a separate thread in a different forum.

Re: [robinheid] Leroy DB
Leave it, Leroy would enjoy this. And yeah I do respect him a lot, because he was sincere as a friend which is rare these days, he didn't run off at the mouth (as far as I know) behind peoples backs, if he had something to say, he said it to you. He knows he was a jackass when it came to BASE, he died being a jackass and I am sure he regrets it, I am sure he would love to take that jump back. Doesn't mean we don't love the guy and some of us weren't touched in some positive way by him. TY Robin.

As far as that goes, that is far from my intent, if anyone in the world can hide Leroy's errors please PM me, I can make millions off you in the circus cause thats one hell of a fucking magic trick.Sly
