Most important info for a new guy to parachuting!
Why are you on this site!?

If you have no experience under a canopy you have no business here. We are not being dicks, it is just the simple truth. Every week it's the same questions, the same posts, day, after day, after day...WTF!? If you don't have any experience under a canopy (a bunch of skydives) go to the drop zone (don't know where one is...dropzone.com). Jump out of planes. Don't waste your time here because nobody is going to respond to you with any seriousness. Jesus...Crazy

New guy checklist before whispering a word of BASE...

Moderators...delete this, edit it, make it all sugar coated, re post it, make it sticky, and create some sort of thing where it has to be viewed and responded too before new explorers can post. This would save a lot of time for us all.Unimpressed

I have a seriously dumb question though. What causes these 180 off heading openings im reading so much about. is it operator error? Is it common?

Several different things can cause them. It'll be difficult for you to visualise them if you don't have a good understanding of the components of a parachute system and the dynamics of an opening.

In reply to:

Sometimes.

In reply to:
Is it common?

Common enough for you to keep reading about them.

it really depends on how you define "Beginner."

the OP clearly defined what he thinks "Beginner" means. if you fail to meet the list, you aren't a beginner as much as a fan/spectator/aspirant/etc.

if you satisfy the OP's list, you'll likely understand what is said here. if you ask questions before meeting most of the list, you will likely NOT understand the answers.

the OP may or may not be correct. everyone gets their own opinion.

experience reading these forums tells me that those who have done what the OP listed, tend to get a friendlier response.

No it's not. It's where new jumpers can interact with other jumpers, produce contacts, get the views on topics in a broad sense outside of the 4 or 5 people in your surrounding area, ect.

Think of it this way, if you were aspiring to be a doctor in high school, would you go online to a medical discussion board where doctors communicate asking about performing an appendectomy? If so do you think they would respond by saying "hey ass clown, try going to medical school first!" No because they are more professional than psychotic basejumpers hints the extremely shitty replies to extremely un-educated questions like "What causes off headings?" Tongue

Doctor vs. Basejumper

Allied health Program=Skydiving

Degree in particular field (Dermatology)=basecourse

Physician's assistant=Mentor w/ jumping from "forgiving" objects

Doctorate in Dermatology + private practice=basejumper that isn't asking dumb questions because he's put the time, training, and effort in.

Get it?Smile

Ok i did some reading on the subject. But If its so easy for you who has education to understand then why are there so many people dying?
Shortcut
Re: [juced442] Most important info for a new guy to parachuting!
Natural selection.
Shortcut
Simple
why are there so many people dying?

Because:
what we do is dangerous,
winds can change abruptly,
people make mistakes,
and shit just happens.

also smart, trained people making emotional decisions.
- think about the herd effect at large events. people want to imitate others to get cool video.
- think of someone compelled to jump even though conditions would say no. it could be the last chance to jump an object before flying back home, and they insist on jumping.

it's called failed impulse control
