whuffo with a question!
Wassup everyone,
Im a Whuffo, my name is Zack, I suck at spelling, Im from New Zealand and Im 20, dumb young and full of cum.
I've been reading through this website nearly everyday at work for the last 4 months. My current mission is to save enough money to purchase a sick skydiving set up, I've saved about $11,000 in 6 months working in central australia so im dedicated. Its because soon I start my diploma in comercial skyding, which is a sick course of 200 jumps in 36 weeks, 12 weeks are in a dropzone for work experience. The idea/goal in to gain employment in the industry.
Anyway my question is about gear I've never met a current skydiver or base jumper so I can't ask anyone but the lovely internet. I would post this on dropzone.com but its about base specific gear.
So from my reading I understand most skyding reserve canopys are 7cell. So would it be an ok idea to purchase a base specific canopy as a reserve? I wouldn't have any issues opening at terminal velocity right? I don't know shit.
The reason I want to fly a base canopy is because I want to pratice base training canopy control. Now Im not that fella who is gonna pump out my 200 jumps then sign up to a FJC assuming im ready. I may never base jump, its just I feel I will in my gut. So if one day jump I want to be more than ready with more than adequate training in freefall and canopy skills. I'll probaby train in basic gymnastics and high diving just coz I love that shit.
Now I have all intension of fully emersing myself in skyding for a few years, I know I will love it.

But yeah sorry about the essay long post just wanted to intro myself.
Any helpful info is mad appreciated.

Cheers Zack.

Okay Cheers Tommy, so I'll just go on and remove my old post then, now that I feel stupid for asking. Had a feeling that might happen.
Just wondering though, are you saying basically become a novice base jumper in order to talk to other base jumpers. because Im from a realitivly small country. So say in my small DZ I don't meet a Jumper, how will I ever get my base specific question answered. because I assumed an online base comunity with heaps of different opinions would be a gererally easy way to get my question aswered without hasseling one individual I may never meet.
And about wasting your eyes by reading my post, you never have to read something you don't want to. You chose to waste your time.
Thanks again Zack

Hi Zack

If you've spent 6 months saving for your skydiving rig whilst working in Australia then i would suggest contacting the ABA as they can probably help you and will be able to give you some relevant advice for NZ / Australia ...

Regards

i would say not even worry about BASE anything just yet, go have fun in the skydiving world and by the time you are ready to make a BASE jump you will have the knowledge needed to do so.

in the US, NO.

and there in lies the problem, especially if you've been reading these 2 sites for 6 months! like sex, BOTH activities (skydiving & BASE) require experience to "get." if you want to know, you must get into the game. Skydiving is generally happy to take someone with zero skills. BASE rarely finds that appropriate. you will lack the fundamentals required to understand.

once you immerse yourself in skydiving, you'll start answering your own questions.

ps
BASE is a harsh activity which kills well trained individuals. it really is for people who can handle adversity. don't expect a warm greeting, unless you are incredibly prepared (and then it may not happen...).

Like I said, we don't mean to come off as dicks, this is a wonderful sport with some amazing people that love to help all walks of people. What people don't seem to realize is the severity of the sport. If we were auto-mechanics and someone said "Hey, I don't have any experience with cars, but could someone teach me to swap an engine out real quick?" We would probably send them a guide manual and say go for it BECAUSE IF YOU SCREW UP YOU DON'T DIE. People that don't even understand the functionality of a canopy have no clue what there curious about because of some damn video that got slapped on youtube. As far as feeling stupid, did ya bother reading the "read this before posting thread" there is a reason for that, posts like this are why. In the last 5 years the number of posts that are exactly what you asked are endless with the same response, if you searched "I'm a new guy" you would have had your answer. New guys get a bad response because we are sick of explaining the same thing over and over and over again, forget about base, not because we don't want you here, because your not ready to be here. I'm mentoring a guy right now, he's got 300 skydives and two base courses (B-day, Apex) and I am more than welcome to help because he is prepared as possible. You can't have a logical base question right now because you don't know shit about base or skydiving. It's like a kid in pre school asking about pre-calculus, there is literally years of info you need before getting there. If you find one individual to help guide you will will get a much better response than on this sight, because to us we are sitting back saying OMG kid, what the hell are you thinking, get some experience, come back in two years. As far as wasting my time, your completely correct, it is my choice. Zack, nobody is trying to be a dick, just trying to explain that there is a lot between whuffo and your first basejump, birth, make noises, say first word, crawl, walk, run.

YOU CAN'T COME OUT OF MOMMY'S VA JJ POLE VAULTING!!!

Sweet as Fellas. Thanks for all the feed back. I had a feeling I would get a little shut down being a whuffo with a question and all. I got a little disapointed So sorry if i got a bit defensive. But you have been helpfull, I appreciate the advice. And you will be hearing from me in the future once I have experince under my belt. Or if I pick my nuts up again some time to ask another stupid question.

I guess as you said You must be super prepared for base. I felt maybe flying a base canopy whilst learning to skydfive could get me very familiar with base equipment. More so than the average skydiver. I just had an idea to be more preped than I'll ever be If in the future I decide to base.

But again thank you. I'll use the advice given.
Peace Zack.

So, being new to forums, I thought I would read through them and found this bloke wanting info. Just wondering, if you still look at this website, if you finished your skydiving and have gotten into BASE yet? I like to see people progress, as I am still very much progressing myself. You seemed like a good kid with a good attitude, just curious how its going?

As a relatively experienced Skydiver just getting into BASE myself I was concerned when I read the above statement by you. I'm sure that you could jump a BASE specific canopy as a MAIN canopy only! You would need to modify the rigging to suit skydiving (terminal) openings via D-bag, sail slider, packing technique etc. to slow down the openings & so as to not break you in half. You wouldn't get much experience flying your BASE canopy if used as a Reserve unless you plan to land on your Reserve every time! Reserve canopies are only meant to be exactly that - Reserve. The idea being that you should only ever deploy your Reserve in an emergency situation. Also, you'll find that Reserve re-packs are costly Tongue

My rookie advice = build up some extensive skydiving experience, study as much about BASE as you can, seek the advice of local BASE jumpers or Mentors & when you're ready participate in a good & reputed FJC. I've nearly 700 skydives & I've been interested in BASE for well over a year now. My personal & work schedule has hampered me from signing up to an FJC until now. But I studied (forums, books & listened to local BASE jumpers). I'm not trying to berate you, just learn as much as you can. Best of luck...

Hey Zak.

There is a guy here under and name of "Cheekybastard". He is the greatest mentor you could find for the sport of BASE. His experience is above and beyond that of mortal men. His character is stand up and he's honest too.

He can show you more about BASE than anyone at this site or in the field for that matter.

He's here, just type in his name and PM him. He's always looking for new students to mentor.

He's your only hope.

it occurs to me that we probably should save the dripping sarcasm for the General Forum.

if the beginners correctly post in this forum, we should give them the courtesy of relatively serious answers. they are voluntarily segregating themselves and showing respect.

let's return the favor.

This was my bad. I bumped this post (look at the date, its an older one) to see if he started working toward his goal. Didn't mean to bring back any of the animosity or anger caused by people who are fascinated by, and inspire to be BASE jumpers, but may not now what an "educated question" may be. Apparently this dude gave up or is to busy working on his goals to respond, so there is no point in beating this horse. My bad, next time I'll just PM.
