BISPESVINGEN SIGN STOLEN IN NORWAY
The sign in Bispesvingen has been stolen this summer. And this sign has a value, only for BASE jumpers. The police is investigating this. And asssume that a jumper has stolen this... They will close Bispen for jumping from 1.october until the sign is returned.

If you know where the sign is, PLEASE send this sign to me so i can bring it back.

Could you ask the town how much would a new sign cost? Because I think it blows that they could close the site for something like that. They have now idea who is behind it!

I'm just saying we could easily raise some money for a new sign. That would be way cooler than just trying to make some thief return the old sign. Kind of like saying we hate thiefs and we'll try to make things right.

Not saying stealing anything is cool, but I see very slim chances of that sign getting returned, no matter who stole it, jumper or not. (If it's a jumper, that person is a total ass, much more so than some random tourist).

So, if you can, find out what it costs, then put up a paypal account or similar and let jumpers impress the town police in a better way.

who cares how much it cost?

setup an account.
collect money.
go to the authorities with cash in hand.
words can feel empty. cash proves someone is serious.

ps
I could see it taken by a tourist as well. one who witnessed a flyby.

It was a tourist, therefore, the site should be closed to tourist.

Norway is a socialist country, they will not take your money. Even the heli ride down from the ledge is for free!

Why not contact the authorities and point out that without it being uncertain wether it was a tourist or a jumper who took the sign, it would be unfair to close the site. Proof first I would say. Why are jumpers always in the wrong side of the curve...?

Re: [Ronald] BISPESVINGEN SIGN STOLEN IN NORWAY
It is even getting worse!

They are going to close Romsdalshorn now, and next will be karlskråtinden and if not the sign is back Gridset.

Well I'm sure the BASE jumpers don't want it closed to them either.

removing the sign is just one of many "negative consequences" that follows elevated public exposure. it might be a rad jumper, an excited witness, or an annoyed local. who knows?

DZH also represents attitudes shared by many.

all these sorts of issues must be addressed by those who want more exposure for BASE. a community with rebellious tendencies is difficult to tame. complaining rarely helps.

Think outside the box a little Paul. It doesn't have to be the sign that is paid for, a local charity organized by jumpers would be even better. Anyway, it sounds like some local authority has an axe to grind with jumpers. Something should be done to calm down this pissed off, power-tripping donut-eater!

And I think the proper term for Norway is "oil country", not socialist... ;)

I am quite surprised by your opinion. In speaking from a free country, in which a legal mountain sport such as mountain flying should attract negative behavior; and I am responsible?

Tom Erik posted a joke about Bispen authorities threatening to close it for BASE jumping and that is not true. I think the only ones who have observed the sign missing is Tom Erik and the Troll Wall keepers (BASE spotters). Sorry for carrying the joke a bit further onto this forum, but for sure it would make an interesting debate.

yep.

rules become necessary when problems crop up. when an activity is small, people can look the other way. as the activity grows it can reach a point where the authorities feel they must take action.

in the US, USPA tries to minimize the issues. this allows the FAA to not fuss with skydiving.

if the authorities feel they must step in because you (or anyone else) raised the activity level, why would you NOT feel responsible?
Shocked

This is Norway http://vimeo.com/14215498.

I do not recognize the picture you are trying to draw at all as skydiving is not comparable to BASE.

If you are looking for an analogy, climbing is a sport based on the same criteria as base, individuality and works out perfect. They have self justice and a forum where the climbers bitch about each other, same as here at BJ. How climbing is regulated in the states compare to Norway, I do not know.

Complicated rescues are an issue for the base scene; the authorities do not make punish groups in Norway. They know how to separate the bad apples from the good within the community.

You have accused me for endanger the jumpers with a competition! Then for making safety rules for the competition! Now for not making rules for Romsdalen.

" seems odd to mention individuality as a core value for basejumping."
BASE was an highly mainstream activity when I started, so of course I must hate independent activities.

I am the reason most jumpers coming to Romsdalen. That is an incredible honour you are giving me, and solely me. Thank you.

I am not taking you DZH serious, but the debate is still interesting especially when a moderator on this forum is putting responsibility on me, and not the individual groups, or jumpers who is visiting. Also a moderator who should know I have been working for safety, written guidelines, and many articles during my time on the board.

DZH remember you are getting cult status now, and have responsibility for those who follow you.

How I see it and to defend my selves from this nonsens, and list some of the previous happenings in Romsdalen. Quite harsh of you adding Mike on to your post as he jumped because of easy access made by me.

1. 1980 The first jump in Romsdalen from Troll Wall by Jorma gave huge tv world wide cover helped by Carl Boenish
2. 1980 - All following movies, news, accidents and the ban of Troll
3. 1993 New generation with Tor Alex in front who reopen Karlskråtind, and make base in Norway to look easy.
4. 1994 Kjerag opens
5. 1999 1. BASE video
6. 2004 New generation jumpers is getting bored to jump alone give invitation to the world to come and jump, and of course the introduction of youtube.
7. 2006 Bispen jumped for the first time.
8.. 1. World BASE Race 2008
9. 1. 2009 World record
10. 2009 60 minutes

2006 The myths about long hikes, complicated access and remote exits is fading. We was before this helped by jumpers who was not fit or equipped for the clima or terrain for awhile, but no longer. We had been waiting for the crowd quite a long time actually, but we managed to keep most in kjerag, since that place worked as an buffer zone for us. Still we do recomended jumpers to go to Kjerag who do not have enough experience, but we see this have almost no affect anymore. Romsdalen became one of the nr 1. place to go.

After i see jumpers starting to compete in front of public getting closer than the other whit cheering from the public, which was an motivator factor to get closer.
What I feel and my intention about my event was, and still is, that world base race is a place where jumpers can battle in a safer way at Gridset. A one time a year event, where we put safety first, and Jumpers are given a chance to meet the best, and learn from the best.

World BASE Race is also a place where the public can meet the jumpers, and I can tell the authorities, public and locals do see BASE or mountain flying with new eyes. I am sure I have given the activity or sport if you like a new face in Norway.

Stein Edvardsen is another person you have been outing before, who did take his responsibility when he open Kjerag. Without his actions, BASE could likely have been forbidden. I do not think most of you who have started base today know how much work and battles there have been to preserve base as it is today in Norway.

I did keep a low profile most of my carrier, but I have always been trying to spread the word about safety. What pisses me of is jumpers like you, who have to prove how stupid you are, and make your very first wingsuit jump from a cliff, for then trying to needle others in debates like this. What is your motive, except from getting underground publicity among your followers? Base is in my hearth, and even I have stopped it will always be with me. You can like it or not, I like to live my dream how I see it, not your way! Respect.

Know your limits!

Also to the whoever removed the windsock thing from under the rock at Bispen - YOU SUCK. It took me about 10 min to put those streamers and stuff on that stick and it was obviously hidden under the rock thing in the landing area for a purpose. Please return it if you have it so i dont land there downwind again. I have enough trouble trying to impress the girls as it is.
