Should mentors charge?
I just found a mentor to teach me base and he hasn't brought up if he wants some money or not. Should he charge? And if so, how much? Or what is a fair price?

Re: [GEARBOX] Should mentors charge?
i would pay for the mentors expenses when you are together. buy the food or gas ( at least a bigger percentage). you could buy him small gear like nicer pilot chutes or extra nice hook knives after a while. just some stuff to show him/her that it is appreciated. i would think that most dont ask for $$ or want it. just pay it forward later.

What Is Fair?
I never charge money but like Sinjin said a
small token of gratitude is expected for all
of the time consumed and effort expended.

Newbies and experienced jumpers alike have
bought me dinner, beer, paid for a boat ride,
and one guy even gave me a new helmet.

None of this was asked for, they gave freely
for helping them, sharing objects, giving them
a free place to stay, etc.

As for the people I teach to pack, the cost is
that they have to pack for me a few times in
the future. I think this is more than fair and
a great endorsement of their packing skill.

We call it a Brotherhood for a reason and
our BASE sisters are definitely inlcuded Smile

be nice, offer cases of beer, and to cook him/her and her/his partner a nice dinner. that would be more rewarding for you and him/her, by far. my students are still my best friends, since there was nothing requested other than ground crewing and being super cool.

Re: [GEARBOX] Should mentors charge?
I paid an individual $600 for mentorship. This was back in 2002 when finding someone to even talk to you at the dz was hard.......but I never gave up, and it was well worth it cause I learned on an very popular illegal object. Most now a days learn at the Potato in daylight with lots of chicks watching Tongue easy stuff man.

Here is my advice. Make sure this person is well qualified. 38 jumps off the Perrine, 3 sub-terminal A jumps, and 1 terminal A jump DOES NOT make them qualified IMO. You can learn some fukced up habits from people who think they are well rounded jumpers but are really not.

2 pennys. Good luck, dont go in.
