Getting Caught in the Military
This post might be a total bust, but are there any other military jumpers out there who might have been caught by the cops before? I would like to know how your chain dealt with it and if anything came out of it? Particularly on the officer side...?

Re: [norwejon] Getting Caught in the Military
If its minor and farther away it likely won't show on the blotter... I'd think hard and tell my commander the short version if he doesn't know already.

Probably "counseled" and maybe a local letter...

Re: [norwejon] Getting Caught in the Military
if you get busted out side of gate (not base specific) , it all depend on your platoon commander and co. commander, you can get article 38 UCJ. restriction, forfeiture of pay or nothing at all.
unless your a officer than I don't know

Re: [norwejon] Getting Caught in the Military
what could possibly go wrong?
You wont get caught man. just run like hell and be ready to spend the night in freedom oak (aka poison oak). Ask JTholmes about that one, that bastard. Anyway thats all i know about that.

Re: [SLAMBO] Getting Caught in the Military
depends on the branch of the military as well i would imagine...........
i know a certain branch right now is WAY overbilleted, underbudgeted, and is only accepting the most highly qualified applicants, with up to a two year wait for a slot at basic. i imagine a member of this branch who gets caught could be facing more than a slap on the wrist, or maybe not. i wouldnt want to be the person to see.........

Re: [UberChris] Getting Caught in the Military
I would say it depends completely on commander discretion and your job... I assume a finance officer might get a slap on the wrist while a student in pilot training would get kicked out... that and of course your luck bucket!

Re: [asuskier] Getting Caught in the Military
Definitely up to your commander. As an officer, you are also held more responsible for your actions and will probably face a steeper punishment for getting caught (just factor it in to your risk management). My commander knows what I do to a certain extent and I think that would help prevent me from getting an off the cuff emotional reaction when he finds out about an incident for the first time.

He also rides dirt bikes competitively and has 19 skydives to that kinda helps. Its definitely a risky game though so ever expect to be let off easy and make sure you get a feel for your commander and what you can tell him. It's his job to gather all necessary information and make an informed decision to support the good order and discipline within his unit and the accomplishment of its mission.

Re: [norwejon] Getting Caught in the Military
all depends on the individual man. My chain didn't know the difference (or just didn't care) between BASE and skydiving. They let me pack while at the job. I think in most cases, most people see it as just as dangerous (if not less) than motercycles.

Re: [norwejon] Getting Caught in the Military
It depends on a few things.

What exactly did you (hypothetically) get charged with? Misdemeanor criminal trespass will have different consequences than felony burglary with resisting arrest.

Did your arrest result in you being UA or missing movement?

Did your arrest prove that you were outside of the approved radius for the liberty period you were on?

Do you have a job that requires a secret clearance?

Are you squared away, or are you a dirtbag whose superiors are looking for a reason to make an example of?

In my case, the charge was misdemeanor air delivery, I was on leave with another week left, my command opinion of me was very high, and the judge offered to dismiss my probation if it turned out it would interfere with my clearance (which it didn't).

My superiors told the park rangers to have me call if they would be holding me for longer than a week. When I reported back to my command, my superiors took me into a room where they wanted to hear the story of what happened. It didn't go any further than that.

I truly believe this will be a case-by-case sort of thing.

In the military, generally, if you are squared away and a hard worker who your chain of command sees as a valuable asset, any trouble you get in will be much smoother than if you're a pain in the ass.

I appreciate feedback from everyone but can't share at this time. I think this will all get cleared up; however, can't take any chances. Once this clears I'll throw the story out there.

I dunno, when I was in the Legion of Sparta, punishment for infractions was usually sodomy. But hey, that was Sparta!

Re: [norwejon] Getting Caught in the Military
Last commander would have crucified me.

Current commander asks me to do doubles off the Perrine after a night of bar-hopping.

I have a TS-SCI clearance...and my "Causing hazard or nuisance by BASE jumping onto a State highway" just drew a chuckle from the investigator who did my recent renewal.

It's like Doc says. Depends on the commander and whether or not you're a shitbag. I've managed to keep my stock pretty high.

@wwarped: Back when I was an operator, high-risk hobbies were expected, even encouraged. My guess is the frog in VA will be just fine.

But I don't know his commander, so...

Re: [six8fbird] Getting Caught in the Military
"operator" is the term for people who conduct operations. As in Special Operations.

Synonymous with Shooter, Snake-eater, Shaker-and-mover" etc.

Back in the late 1980s, my friend Steve Morrell, BASE 174, was caught jumping in Yosemite. He was an active pilot with the Air Force. He was punished by being sent to a God forsaken base in Saudi Arabia.

Wasn't that Wil Oxx? I think he got nabbed a few times. Pilot.

I used to jump with an ex-spec ops dude who ended up as a captain with a more security sensitive job.

We always took care of him by testing the waters as to drawing heat, because his CO was a jerk at the time.
