why would you? isn't there a better option?

i was just asking as i skydive thats all and im trying to buy a base rig

ofcourse it has been done, and is possible. But there sure is a reason why people just the gear they jump now.. on you it is to answer the question of you want to take the risk of getting hurt or killed.. but yes.. it is possible!

well i was just looking for a reson and if it can be done but i wouldnt wona jump anything below 800ft with it thow lol im just going to buy a base rig and then just use that

 
Absolutely it can be done. You can jump way under 800 ft wi th it. In fact depending on a numberof things it can be even better suited for really low jumps then a ordenary base rig. D-bag for example. It allows a reserve option, and some times that's a real option especally if you mod it to work like a Sorcerer.

All of this presums a level of tecnical knowlage that you clearly lack at this time so please don't go and try it on your own.

Sure, it'll work fine, trust me. Just make sure your exit has a MAXIMUM distance from the potential point of impact of 700ft, so that your cypress won't fire accidentially.

Try to look at the bigger picture: If it were suitable to use skydiving gear for BASE jumping, there would be no such thing as BASE gear.

Yep. Get some gear and jump off something - always a good time.

Apologies if this is a dipshit question/has been discussed before, but how would a skydiving rig be better off a dirty low object? Like you said, it would be an advanced jump; I'm just curious as to what the advantages of using one would be vs. using a base rig.

With only slight mods to a deployment bag you can do direct bags. It gives you very good control of the canopy heading as it's extracted from the bag. If you are free packing in a baserig you're down to a pilot chute assist or staticline. Control of the canopy is not as positive. You can get a slightly higher opening with the bag. The only advantage to a PCA is that you can get a bit of a launch but I don't think it's worth the greater chance of the canopy turning.

i have not done a base jump yet, and that's why i'm gonna reply here with my "opinion", and the reason i'm gonn put it here is that i'm thinking of doing bridge day this year or next and all i have access to is a skydiving rig. i would say yes, based on the fact that early base jumping (please correct me if i'm wrong) started out using skydiving gear, then was modified and evolved into base specific manufacturing as the sport evolved and caught on.

like i said, this is only an opinion based on my own research into base jumping which i started in 1996 when i started jumping.

but the question comes again, why would you want to? with little or no experience try something the big boys today dont do anymore? Is your life not worth the extra cash to fork out for the right gear? your right it does work but things evolve for a reason........ heres only 2 examples:-

I like BASE as there are no rules, only advice.....jump a skydiving rig if you really want to but be prepared to become a statistic sooner or later

jumping a skydiving rig can be done safely, but most of the expertise to make it relatively safe has been lost for the last couple base generations. most of the gear issues from the 1980s era related to hard pin pulls, bridles that were not long enough, and inadequate pilot chutes.

for most slider down jumping, heading performance is not as good as a base rig, in my experience.

thanx for the post. i read the guidelines yesterday, after i posted the reply, and have since figured out that i won't be jumping this year due to the fact that i have only 70 jumps.

the reason that i was interested in this thread to begin with is that i was thinking of using an old skydiving rig to jump with, and have since reading the reply, will not be doing that either.
