To measure low objects precisely, you'll need a range finder. If you are happy with roughly 10% error, then all Suunto watches will do quite fine. I have been using Suunto S6 for years, It works well enough for things over ~100m where small error is not so big deal.

You might also do a forum search with "Suunto"....

Re: [fbw.sw] Altimeter Watches
most altitude devices measure barometric pressure, which can change. skydive enough and you'll experience a day where you must reset your altimeter to zero.

if it takes a few hours to hike up to the exit point, will a barometric device remain accurate? if it is high enough to take that long, will it matter?

remember, these devices must only measure the local pressure. to find out about a ledge below a cliff edge, you must get the device to it.

range finders use lasers, tend to be more accurate, and can measure objects without physically reaching them.

every device has limitations. the key is to NOT get device dependent (aside from a parachute). people have posted before that they love their altitude watches. like so much else, know the limitations and have fun.

Do a search on here, you'll find many comments on why Alitmeter watches should not be your only means for finding height. Again as wwrapped mentioned, they read off barometric pressure which is always varible. The new Suunto X10 has the capabiity of giving you GPS elevation.

For a simple Alti watch, no bells and whistles, Silva Alta is more accurate than Suunto... especially for lower atlitude readings....

I have casio Pathfinder here I really like it there solar too, I had Highgear once the band come off you can not put it back they break easy, there customer service is really bad, Suunto is over rated, they are not much better than casio,

bushnell range finders are really accurate. make sure not to get the golfer edition, that is also accurate but even more heftily priced than the others.

a laser rangefinder is even precise enough to triangle objects with enough accuracy to determine base jump configurations.

if you are near munich (or hamburg, i am there for business quite regularly), you can borrow mine and try it.

i only use my suunto to know how much altitude i still have until i get to the top/exit while i am on my way up.

I use the Suunto altimeter watch for skydiving as well as BASE (base just for object height after zeroing it at landing area). They work very, very well

Re: [fbw.sw] Altimeter Watches
you can get them on ebay and amazon for pretty cheap..... but yeah wait until he tries it. I mean we use altimeters for reference, not to stare at it the entire time. The numbers are big and black so every time you glance you know your altitude..... feet or meters..... under canopy you aren't falling at 130 so it's easier to read.. but they are very accurate... matter of fact... other jumpers usually set their altis to mine... hahaha

Re: [fbw.sw] Altimeter Watches
I use a Highgear Shadow. It has been more accurate than my Suunto ever was,and works as well on head down skydives. It measures in 1ft increments, and if barometric pressure goes up or down there is a simple way to figure exact altitude with an equation(included in manual). It is cheaper than a Suunto Core, but about same price as the old Suunto Vector.

does anyone use the Avocet Vertech Pilot? I've got one (sans owners handbook) and the thing just may be smarter than i am! Haven't had a whole lot of luck finding info online.

No this one. The summit is not a good watch from what I read. I have had 2 Alterras, and only got rid of 1 to buy a new different color.
