In reply to:
A 27-year-old man is being called “the luckiest man around” after blowing back into the cliffside while base-jumping off the S******s C***f near S******h Wednesday.

S*****h Search and Rescue manager John Howe said a call came in around 2 p.m. that a man was stuck on the P**w W**l of the C***f.

“He jumped off a cliff and slammed into this ledge which is about three metres square, sloping,” Howe said. “He was able to hang on to this little tree that prevented him from falling off the edge, and then he was able to cut his parachute loose and made his way to the back of this ledge where he held on to a small crack which formed a handhold. It was amazing.”

A Search and Rescue Team was flown to the top of the C***f and lowered down from a ledge near the top of the second peak, Howe said.

The man, who said he was visiting, suffered only a minor injury to his foot, which is likely broken. He was rescued around 5:30 p.m.

“I told him, ‘I think you’re the luckiest man I know,’ ” Howe said. “He was really relieved. Obviously he was in a real pickle, plus he’d injured his foot and was hanging on in a really cramped position.”

Base-jumping is sport that involves jumping off a fixed surface with a packed parachute.

Howe said while he has seen many people base-jumping off the C***f, this is only the second such incident he recalls from the past 10 years.

next time you come to burn someone's object.... THINK!!!!!

the fucking trees were ready to be blown over yesterday!that would have been my first indication to not even bother starting to hike up and if you couldn't see, hear , or figure that shit out for yourself, then you should have called someone from around there that jumps regularly and keeps a pretty close eye on the weather for help on making a better judgment call.
i'm glad that your alive and made it out with out 3rd degree burns, but you just made this place so hot and the rest of us are going to be paying for that for a long time.

The Chief is a 'legal' base jump . no need to x-out the words .

even if it IS legal, I'll defer to the locals about site naming. posting the name may attract unwanted attention, making it more difficult for the locals.

treehousemike seems rather upset...

Re: [wwarped] Vancouver: Base jumper rescued 14th July 2010
I usually don't go around and post BASE exits legal or not, & Ya he sounds pissed . It is a unregulated piece of rock open to all for public recreation activity. As stated in the News article along with the video of the Helo extraction & rescue. Kind of late for any unwanted attention around there now .
Not writing a objects name in a public forum did not keep someone with a canopy finding it, keeping him from jumping off it, getting a 180 & getting a high profile rescue . Censorship takes a backseat to the reality of a BASE jumping education . Same for, 'Hungry to Jump' will take a backseat to Safety a lot of times in jumpers minds .

I'll agree with everything you posted.

Unfortunately, I recall the folks around the ITW don't really want details mentioned much either. Paul, from Norway, happily names places and encourages folks to visit.

Whether or not the No Site Naming policy helps, it seems like the courteous thing to do. It shows respect to the locals, until they openly invite everyone.

I doubt it will prevent the over-eager from getting in above their heads.

Looks like it has happened again. Unsure

Obviously time will tell as to what went wrong here. The Chief is a fantastic jump when you respect the havoc Mother Nature will impose on the site when conditions are not ideal. I know I have walked down from jumps there.

Is it really under-hung or is that just the angle the photos were taken from ?

Re: [stitch] Rescue 14 July 2010 Vancouver
The exit point I have jumped from is not under hung. But where I jumped from there is a gully (300 feet or so to impact at the bottom of the gully). The idea is to go slider off and open high enough to over fly the far side of the gully and from there it is a long ass picturesque canopy ride down. But if you get sucked down into the gully ... yikes it's just not anywhere you want to be. Now if I am not mistaken there might actually be a 2nd exit point. But I was under the impression it was sketchy because it might be under hung and more exposed to the winds.

But I am only familiar with the exit point I have been off of.

Re: [CanuckInUSA] Rescue 14 July 2010 Vancouver
There are a number of exit points there... Either way, weather patterns in the area are fairly consistent and if you speak to the locals, they can tell you when, where and how... if you don't listen to them or don't contact them and go anyway, you can easily get fucked up on this object... it may be a 2000ft cliff but it's no walk in the park.
