Low jumps - open tuck tabs yes or no - handheld?
Hi,

I was taught to open my bridle protection tuck tabs on my zak 2 (2 pin rig) for low jumps (85m +-). It has worked fine until now, but I don't like it somehow because when I prepare on the bridge (ie. fold pc) it is more difficult to keep track of the bridle routing as it now comes from the pins and passes by the open flap. The other way, I can feel my way along the bridle to the first pin and under the flap it goes - end of story.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

D.

85 meters = 279 feet
Disclaimer: I have never jumped a Zak.

I do have experience with doing low jumps solo:
190 feet, static line, 3 times
212 feet, handheld, 1 time
222 feet building, 8 times
Many jumps 300' & below

Thanks to a trick from
Speephreak, I now route
my bridle differently for low handheld jumps by
closing the bottom pin then the top pin so the
bridle comes out the top of the rig.

Yes, I do leave the pin cover flap open on jumps
with delays of 1 second or less, my thinking is
that there is no benefit to re-close after checking
my pins since it will be open real soon, one way
or the other - ha ha.

On the recent freefall from 212 feet I also opened
the riser cover flaps, not that they require much
force or time to open but from that low I figured
every little bit could only help.

Thanks - good tip about the bridle routing!

Re: [dimbohall] 85 meters = 279 feet
Only thing I dont like about doing that is that my tuck is a little loose because the flaps are undone. That being said, I still do it on jumps that are low and would put me in a very bad position if I had an offheading.

Re: [dimbohall] Low jumps - open tuck tabs yes or no - handheld?
just my opinion of course...

but i do not open my pin flaps on any of my rigs ever. it is designed to open that way and has absolutely no negative effect for lower jumps. i feel that if anything, it becomes a snag hazard (highly unlikely, but nevertheless) if it's loose and flapping around.

the same reason i don't believe in priming pins, which is slightly off topic... but it's a fucking curved pin. if the bridle is going to move it 7/16", it's going to move it the full inch.Wink

that being said, i do a lot of low freefalls (rigged that way), especially from sketchy little cell towers (where the rig may rub on things) where there either is no easy way to perform a pin check (or no one else present anyway) and it makes it much simpler to just reach back and check my flap cover and bridle are in shape prior to exit.

so there.Tongue

You pack and route everything the same for jumps
from the Perrine as you do for a sub-300 freefall?

Re: Low jumps
I reverse the bridle routing for hand held jumps. Works for me.

Re: [GreenMachine] Low jumps
yup. i pack the same for EVERY slider down/off jump.

which includes the same sloppy packjobs i put off the perrine, i jump off 140' As.Wink if it takes more than 20mins, i'm usually disappointed in myself.Tongue

"I have more jumps than posts. Deerr, I'm awesome."

Who the fuck cares about posts to jumps ratios. Some people like to post, and some people don't, for a myriad of reasons. We are all adults and should have the ability to question what we read on a forum. I like to post for entertainment mostly and sometimes for ego boosting. I especially like to post while drunk, though I sometimes regret it. LaughUnsure

That being said, I just got home from solo opening a 245' A with a stupid big and easy LZ, now three beers in. I went SL from 228' bc that was the best exit point for the conditions and my life is too sweet right now to ff that low on a solo opening with no moon. Look at me, I did a super easy jump all by myself, deerrr. Tongue

I do.

If I ever have more posts than jumps, please reign me in as well.

ps, I'm not awesome. But I jump with a lot of people who are, Blitkreig, MMK, Matt_f_001... plus many others.

Man, those guys with not a lot of posts, but a lot of jumps...

Elliot, quit posting already, you are screwing up your ratio! See ya in the valley soon!

edited to add something constructive;

I pack the same for all my slider down jumps.

I also use and have used WLO toggles for hundreds of slider down jumps, and they work well.

My Rock dragon works well and has not lost it's flare after a couple hundred jumps.

That should cover at least 3 threads of constructive posting... Shoot, I should have voted in your should I jump or not poll before...

Good thing I used this edit to keep my post to jump count low. Wink

Oops, I shouldn't have posted that. I'm really messing up my ratio with these wasteful posts. My skills as a BASE jumper are never going to progress if I keep posting more than I'm jumping. Tongue

At least I don't have to worry about you replying. I know you would never risk messing up your ratio over something as trivial as an argument about the importance of posts to jump ratios. Laugh

BTW, If you want to be really cool/ awesome you should pretend like you don't care and that your ratio is the result of you not having time to post, due to all the sick objects you're jumping.

in my defense, the majority of my post count was transferred over here from DZ.com. so if you want to total all my jumps, then i'm doing extremely well in the post to jump ratio... Tongue

i'm flattered you consider me awesome as well. haha. see ya' soon bud, i've got some ideas brewing...Shocked

Sure. Why not?

I'd like some confidence that however I've been packing, closing, and throwing my pilot chute is going to produce fast on-heading openings.

Re: [blitzkrieg] Low jumps
Much of my post count was from the dz dot com split. I have more jumps than you have posts so that's what really counts.

By the way. So do I.

I pull my bottom pin for low jumps to mimic the reverse bridle routing thing. PLUS, I think it transforms my Vertex into a Prism which I think is bad ass. Prisms Rule!
