Wind Turbine. A or Other?
Did my first two base jumps last month from a 255' Turbine and was wondering how many people consider it an A or other or whatever?

Re: [againsthumanity] Wind Turbine. A or Other?
I'd call it a B

Re: [kellyface272] Wind Turbine. A or Other?
I'd call it an O, and awesome. Still haven't jumped one of those...

Re: [againsthumanity] Wind Turbine. A or Other?
It's a wind turbine and a BASE jump. nothing more and nothing less.

Spinners are the coolest jumps for sure. It's cool they were your first.

If you called it a "T" and you had a bunch of guy's that BASE jump, AND they were in a band, you could call them "The BASE-T boys"

Sounds awesome!, maybe on the low side for a newbie but whatever. A BASE jump for sure. Don't spend too much time thinking about the qualifiers specifically. You will get them when you can and when they are available. Its better to take the slow a steady route. In about 2.5 years I had over 120 BAS jumps before I got my E. What you jumped isn't a qualifier, non the less, cool as hell.

Well, I have 20 BASE jumps now and all I need is a B to have done all 4. I am not too worried about it. It will come in time.

the following has nothing to do with official duties on this site...

if it is a BASE jump, shouldn't the object then be either a B, A, S, or E? what else is there? I see only 4 letters...

without a formal organization that defines everything, each person is free to believe what they want.

(have Joy and Rick denied a number because they disagreed on how someone identified an object?)

What do you believe? Without answering with a question, what is your opinion. I realize you choose not to have one, or care what someone else calls it, but what is your personal opinion Tongue

Here's mine

Regardless of the convoluted method to categorize all objects to conform to BASE acronym, they don't all fit. A windmill is a windmill. It is not an antenna, it is not a building, it's a windmill.

There are a LOT of examples to go on so here's just one:

A large wooden roller coaster in a convoluted way can be considered a building, so could a Ferris wheel. (Although the Farris Wheel in Texas is a freestanding antenna).

My opinion: If it's a qualifier, It should be a free fall and it should be obvious to anyone that it's a Building, or an antenna, or a bridge or a cliff. (maybe a tree because that's just cool).

Other than that, who cares. A BASE jump doesn't doesn't require fitting into the category.

Kleenex is just one brand of facial tissue.

Of course Rick and Joy won't care, it's your jump, it's your journey so it doesn't actually matter. I do feel that the nifty green card should represent going out and finding exactly what the acronym stands for. It's a fun game. I like my card. It was fun getting it.

Negative on the swing steps Tongue

I have moved onto lesson 10 in another style.

Re: [againsthumanity] Wind Turbine. A or Other?
Somewhere I saw a different view on classification. It was based on how the wind behaves with the object. It was:

B - wind flows around it.
A - wind flows through it.
S - wind flows bellow it.
E - wind flows above it.

It still can suffer from ambiguity, but might help in situations where usual definition is ambiguous too.

Re: [Smilediver] Wind Turbine. A or Other?
Take a large cement bridge pillar for instance. Wind flows around it.

You're walking up the path through the forest and stumble across a random 736 foot bridge with two 400 foot high pillars supporting it.

"Look at the buildings holding up that bridge." ... You say.

You call your best base jumping buddy and tell him to meet you right away to jump these sweet buildings. Your buddy can't wait to jump his first building so he meets you at the bridge with gear in hand. You both climb down and get on he roof of one of the two buildings. He goes first and rejoices now that he's jumped a building. You huck a slow gainer, land next to your best base jumping buddy and high five the success of jumping one of he two sweet buildings supporting the bridge.

So counting trees, cranes, chimneys, turbines, power pylons, non-specific "others"... what are we now?

per the original wind definition, they are probably A's

I agree without all the qualifying phrasing.

ps
fwiw, I've jumped a drawbridge and logged it as an A. I jumped one of the support towers. a 180 would have meant hitting the steel. the wind definitely blew through the structure. if I had jumped the deck, I would have logged it differently.
