How high was the bridge?

Did he live?

I think Mark Hewitt, BASE 46, had done the same thing on a regular basis, similar to his invention of his WAD (wild ass deployment) method.

The bridge is 190' above water. Photo taken in 1986. I do know that he did survive but I 'm unsure if he got any deployment (no PC).

My worldview of early BASE days is now shattered. I thought I was standing on the shoulders of giants. I thought of early BASE jumpers as true geniuses who cleverly engineered the ways to cheat gravity in most intimate and daring ways possible. I've always looked UP to these fearless, yet intelligent pioneers who made BASE what it is today.

But not anymore.

I see that early BASE had more retarded ninjas than Maggot would ever imagine. I thought I held the hard earned Retarded Ninja #2, but now I have to bump my number into three digits.

I popped a beer to sooth my sorrow of shuttered beliefs, but the can just wouldn't get empty no matter how much I drink from it as my tears are refilling it...

I think the modern days when you can just buy a modern BASE rig on ebay, put on a foam batman suit you wore at Halloween party, and leap off the big wall in Finland, are much more sane than what we see in these pictures from the 80's.

i view most of the early day base jumpers as geniuses. i've met a lot more than most current day jumpers have. a lot of the gear came full circle. when base generation 1 retired, a lot of techniques that base generation 2 used were inferior to generation 1. those inferior techniques were adopted by generations 3 and 4. around generation 5, manufacturers started figuring base out, and they invented some new things and reinvented some stuff from generation 1. a lot of what generation 1 did came from the innovative thought of that era, primarily from the early 1970s when every gear configuration possible was being experimented with.

There were retards of the old days just like there are retards of today.

It's shattered you retard! If you keep spelling it shuttered then I think your Retarded Ninja #2 status will remain safely in your hands Wink

Those guys may have also invented the WAD. Several inventions were made independently of each other. Mark Hewitt is widely credited with the invention of the WAD in the United States.

Peter Hammond and Mark Sechler were experimenting with unpacked jumps in '82.
