You can wash it by hand using a non scented phosphate free detergent. Then just hang it to dry away from any UV light, including florescent lights.

Re: [Kiki32] Cleaning poison oak off gear
it's not permanent, it goes away by it self abut 2-3 weeks, I landed in big patch of poison ivy my canopy on top of it all, week later I pack it and I can smell it little bit but second week nothing, no washing or anything.

Re: [airdog07] Cleaning poison oak off gear
I'm pretty sure poison oak oil will not just go away on it's own. If it was my gear I would consider burning it, or giving it to someone I didn't like. Sly

Re: [AdamLanes] Cleaning poison oak off gear
Silly adamlanesbackinthedays, you cant burn poison oak. It gives off fumes that are toxic to inhale.

Re: [Kiki32] Cleaning poison oak off gear
Oh yea, good point. That would suck!

Re: [Kiki32] Cleaning poison oak off gear
You can wipe it off pretty easy from a pilot chute. I've landed my ground launch canopy in a field of waist deep Poison Oak. I waded through it for close to 20 minutes getting out.

It wasn't in full season but it it still worked as Poison Oak was intended. I did nothing with the canopy and it was fine when I used it again a few weeks later.

If it was full season, I would have washed it. It's just a pilot chute so wiping it down with Cheer and warm should work just fine.

As far as my body was concerned. I know an allergy doc so aggressive meds kept me fairly sane.

Ive been miserable for going on 3 weeks now. It still hasnt gone away yet. 3 hot showers a day, followed by burning the shit out of it with a hair dryer, then acne pads on it, then gold bond cream followed by gold bond powder.

Wearing long sleeved shirts to work in 80 degree weather sucks. Unsure

Re: [Kiki32] Cleaning poison oak off gear
Back before the turn of the century, we used NPS Rangers to absorb it.

Re: [Kiki32] Cleaning poison oak off gear
if you're miserable pour gas on it. it's not good for you, but it dries it out fast. Tongue

also, hot showers usually just aggravate it... i would turn the temp down!
Shortcut
Re: [blitzkrieg] Cleaning poison oak off gear
I always rub straight bleach on it for a quick dry-out.
Shortcut
Re: [thrillseek] Cleaning poison oak off gear
yup... and if you know you've been exposed to it (or if it happens again) rub yourself down with Tecnu like Shane was talking about. that stuff really does work wonders. i'm very allergic to that stuff and Tecnu pretty much neutralizes it before it gets into your pores if you act fast!
Shortcut
Re: [blitzkrieg] Cleaning poison oak off gear
Tecnu wouldve totally helped if I knew I had it sooner. I didnt find out it was poison oak until 8 days later. Crazy

And you want to take the chance of this pilot chute giving it to you again? Not me!

for fuck's sake!! You're acting like it's the black plague!
Essentially, poison ivy and oak, etc are oils. Put some gloves on, fill your sink with hot water, and scrub with dawn dish soap. Rinse. Repeat. Let it dry and never give it another thought.

Would you really throw away a perfectly good pilot chute because it touched Poison Oak?

Re: [Kiki32] Cleaning poison oak off gear
Let me get this straight, so from now on when the rocks are comeing and you're burning through pull time, every time you start to reach back to throw you're going to think about all the pain you're going through now. Will you hesitate? Maybe if you only grab it losely, maybe with just your thumb and one finger, maybe you wont have to go through this again. The walls comeing out at you but you don't want to touch it...

Yep.

I want to have all of my attention on the jump with no consideration whatsoever on the possibility that I might even get a little tiny bit of poison oak. I can't stand poison oak. At all!

It ain't about money. It's about attention.

If you ever contact poison oak with any of your gear, please send it to me and it will have a great home Smile

I've had run ins with poison oak and I'm very susceptible but I will gladly use it if you're not going to!

I always jizz on my PC when I am going stowed below 400 feet. This ensures my hand will not slip off the pilot chute, which would be disastrous. However I am not sure about Gonorrhea jizz. It probably will burn a hole in it.

Re: [Kiki32] Cleaning poison oak off gear
Hot showers will just spread it if there is any oil still on your skin. I take a cold shower straight away, with technu soap, and repeat that several times. As soon as you get all the oils off, you can go to hot, but if you use hot water too soon it will just open up all your pores, and spread. Also, poison oak and ivy are very different. Oak oils can stay on your clothing (or pilot chute) for more than a year if they aren't washed properly. I would just sell it online to some unsuspecting jumper who you don't like, and claim that you don't like the color or something. If you are still miserable after a week or two, you might want to think about a steroid shot (cortisone works well). That should clear it up in a few days. And wash everything you own that could have touched it, then wash it again.
Miserable stuff, though.
