I don't join forums to read dry answers to the same old questions again and again. I join to be part of a community, and as with all communities sometimes people will joke around and sometimes people might even argue, and call each other a name or two. That's part of belonging to a community.

I check a couple of other forums on a daily basis, and there's one for skydivers in Canada I might check every couple of weeks, cause no one says anything on it unless it's official, and usually I already know that from word of mouth.

So I'd rather belong to a vibrant forum that allows people to express themselves than one that doesn't, even if everything on it is factual and nothing is even exaggerated. LIFE isn't like that.

Banning someone because of that is wrong. If this doesn't sit well with the newer 'base image', so be it.

It's because you didnt grow up in the US. You see, in the US right around my generation parents figured out they could pop us kids in front of the TV and presto - instant baby sitter. So you see out brains are conditioned to enjoy senseless babble, drama, profanity, and all the other amazing gifts we have from television.

a few thoughts...
- the rules have been there ever since bj.com split off from dz.com (and might be exactly the same as dz.com, I don't know or care.)
- the rules are really designed to let the most people participate. base75 seemed to be a big reason Jason Bell does not post as much (although there could be other reasons...)
- users complain about the noise level. if people followed the rules, odds are the noise level would decrease.
- the only direction I've really ever received was to ensure civility on the forums by enforcing the rules. Namemedia had NEVER given me any guidance. thus any discussion of profit, corporate, etc., strikes me as incorrect.
- as the principle enforcer of "The Rules," I really try to avoid it. I understand there will always be a certain level of non-productive "push back." (and if I wanted "push back," I'd shag a sheep on a cliff edge... )
