Gibraltar
Any locals in Gibraltar out there? Or anyone with any experience there? There are a couple of us that have a trip there coming up. Are there exit points on the obvious E?

Thanks for any help that anyone can give.

Re: [almacartney] Gibraltar
Hi,

I found this thread whilst search for anyone who had ever jumped Gibraltar before... can't find anyone (other than Bond in The Living Daylights) so thought I'd reply to your questions.

I'm from Gibraltar, grew up here, climbing up and around the rock, so know it fairly well. The only real point you could leap from is within military territory, so would be really, really dangerous... however, if you could get up there, it's a sheer 400 metre cliff from there.

You have a second issue, wind. The wind around Gibraltar can be very turbulent, often causing aircraft to abort landing here and diverting to nearby Malaga.

Third issue, disputed air space. Spain is right next door and there are many political issues you would face if you say jumped, floated and landed in Spain without having gone through the proper channels and border. However, I think this would add to the thrill.

I'm not a jumper, and only signed up to post this. I've done a couple of tandems so far, and would love to solo one day, but BASE is just too crazy to even think about just now. Kudos to all of you!

Re: [RockApe] Gibraltar
I was there last year. Thought that one exit point was doable, I was told 1200-1400ft. Also very deceiving depth perception as it's over water. And yeah, windy as hell as well as within a park with paid admission (although it was absolutely empty)

Re: [vid666] Gibraltar
It is considered one of the most dangerous airports in the world to land an airplane because of the winds. If a 747 has to abort landings, what will a blackjack do?

This is due to the strong crosswinds as well as the poor ILS system, most pilots opt for a manual landing in Gib.

The "park" that vid666 mentions is a nature reserve in the upper rock... although, travelling with a resident will get you free access into it. I'd still maintain that the north face would be your best bet, however there could be some other areas where a jump would be possible.
