Moab - landing on the roads
It is busy with all types of outdoor enthusiasts in Moab at this time of year - the majority use the roads for, or to get them from/to, their activities. Please avoid landing on the road and interfering with the traffic. If there is an alternative landing area (e.g. there is a really nice and big landing area in the bowl at TS), use it. If you feel you have to land on the road, check for traffic before you jump. Jump when there is no traffic - that includes approaching/leaving traffic, not just traffic below the exit point. If you have to jump with traffic below and you have to land in front of traffic and you have to block the road, please clear the road in a timely manner. I am sure you would be upset if some random person would jump out in front of you as you drive along your highstreet, then just stand there and start twiddeling with his iPhone (or start stowing his toggles/gear at a leasurely pace).
Why this post? - Wittnessed the above by visiting jumpers today and am getting bored with rangers waiting in landing areas near various exit points trying to catch me landing on the road and if I don't land there feeling compelled to talk to me anyway telling me that I will get a ticket if I was to land on the road. This is a non-issue, as long as jumpers do not draw attention to us landing on occasions on the road. If you are not disrupting anyone, nobody will/can complain - causing minor traffic jams creates a potential problem.
Please don't turn this into a "What are they going to charge me with anyway?" discussion. Those of us who jump here regularly receive special attention as a result of some 'misguided' decisions by a minority of individuals.
On a side note - don't get hurt just to avoid the road - if the situation dictates, be safe - any fine will be less than a helicopter ride to SLC/GJ.
