Aerials
Is there a recommendation for doing doubles and triples? How many single backflips should you approx do before moving onto doubles...so forth for triples! Going to perrine next week and want to move onto doubles and possibly a triple!

Dwain Weston wrote a great article on aerials. I think it is archived on blinc and will definitely answer your questions on technique and progression.

Re: [BASE1375] Aerials
Advice I got at the X before i did my first triple:

"So Shawn I am about to do my first triple...any advice?"
"Yeah...just do one more than a double."

I had 5 gainers before I attempted a double. I had 5 gainers and 1 double before I attempted a triple. Right after that triple I did a 2 way triple. As long as you're getting the hang of it it's really easy and progressive you just gotta have the fundamentals down but more importantly be super aware of what is happening with your body and around you.

Timing and awareness is key. Even though you are flipping backwards through the air you have to be hyper sensitive about your rotation, altitude, body position, and especially timing. I typically get my hand on my PC when my back is towards the ground in my last rotation, untuck and lay it out once i am head down and see the ground, then pitch when i am at about a 45 degree angle and headlow. This way i am continuing to rotate while the PC is inflating and the canopy is extracting so that i am around a 45 degree head high position when the canopy inflates.

The thing with doing them at the perrine is there isnt a whole lot of time and you're really getting into the basement when you're talking about triples and even doubles if your rotation is slow. The advantage, is since its a span you dont have to launch out and can use all that momentum to just tuck and give it hell. Have someone watch and/or video you and start with singles and do them as fast as you can, then move to doubles and do the same thing. Watch the difference in speed with multiples...i tend to lose momentum fast and my third rotation is painfully slow. I personally wouldnt do a triple at the perrine but people have before.

Re: [BASE1375] Aerials
I have done close to twenty triples at the perrine, but was super current at the time, and was on a five week trip up there. I was doing well with pitch time on doubles, and could speed my rotation up enough. The key there is knowing you can get it done fast enough AND pitching at the right time (I also did all of mine slider down). After three rotations, you are low, to have a bridle wrap your ankle because you pitch early that low can easily kill you. Every time I walked out there to do a triple, I was terrified. Keep in mind I don't have any experience with aerials outside of BASE, so for some, it's not so daunting. Don't rush into it. If you are "pitching and praying" on doubles, definitely don't do a triple. Just cause you can spin fast, doesn't mean you should... Wink

You don't have the experience and you'll probably die.

Personally, I think you should be mad proficient at triples before doing them at Perrine. And also go slider down, which will hurt plenty unless you are REALLY, REALLY good at them.

Re: [vid666] Aerials
Honestly, I was doing them all slider down, a lot of them were pushing the 3.5 second marks, and the openings weren't bad at all. The fact that your rotations energy is working with the opening canopy (whereas with a front, for example, your rotation will be working "against" the energy of the opening canopy) seems to make a huge difference. I even botched my third triple out there (threw it much too slow) and ended up taking around 4.5 seconds slider down. The opening STILL wasn't bad (I think solely because I was doing gainers). Another instance I was doing a triple back flip (facing the bridge) and completely f*cked it up, had to flip off my back at around 3.5 seconds and pitched right around 4.5 seconds (4.7 i think from video). That one gave me pretty severe whiplash for about 6 months (naturally as I was a bit head low and didn't have the energy swinging me into the opening canopy like on a well timed gainer). Don't think it would be a bad idea to dial them in somewhere else though, you only have 6 seconds to impact, and MOST of mine took 3 seconds or longer. Doesn't leave room for much error...

Honestly dude go to KL and hammer that shit somewhere high for 3 solid days. Room to use a slider and not scare the shit out of yourself, or develop a false sense of security!

Re: [Dunny] Aerials
Sounds good..i wont even think about doing a triple...i will just stick to perfecting my single gainer and then maybe try a double towards the end of the trip!!

Thanks for the advice!Smile

Aerials are best done from the rail. if you have any diving or gym experience you should be fine. Do what your comfortable with plus 1.

Re: [BASE1375] Aerials
I think a double is "almost" easier than a single. Don't lose track of where you are. The above poster is correct about pitch timing.

Have fun man, Doubles are sick! Trips are sicker esp when you take them of E's!

As far as technique for the actual flip. I find it best to go off the rail like Hoytalot says. I can get the trips around in under 3sec if I huck hard and tuck tight. The key is to swing the arms back and as you launch, swing them back in front, jump hard, tuck and lay your head back. once you first flip is done and pitch at a 45° head down. this will rotate you perfectly through the deployment.

Hey did a few singles at the bridge and then moved onto doubles, did about 12 doubles in 2 days at the bridge! Had alot of fun and i love doing them now!!

For some odd reason i would have my hand on the PC right off the bat from the exit and i didnt even know i was doing it, i did that about 2-3 times. The one time i came off axis on exit was because i didnt stretch and now i understand how important stretching is after alot of climbing and having sore muscles!

Dude, I think you're confused, a triple isn't when you cross the border three times...
