Well since this nylon addiction does not seem to be
improving I went and spent the money for a pair of
real boots. After a couple hours of searching online
for the actual company to no avail I decided to order
them from Apex BASE - thanks Todd.

So yesterday a fat, black, UPS delivery guy brought
them to my doorstep while talking on his fucking cell
phone... unemployment is in double digits and being
a UPS guy is a decent job and this moron is doing it
half ass, and we wonder why America is rotting?!?

$350 for a pair of boots - you'd think there would be
some bit of paper in the box, not necessarily a manual
but maybe some suggestions/techniques to ensure the
customer gets the most out the boots.

Hell, a pair of boxers or an electric tooth brush come
with more instructions than these special $350 boots.

Anyways, the point of my post is this: does anyone
have any tricks for preserving or breaking them in?
As in: use insoles, spray them with scotchgard etc,

Nice boots Tom. A bit over my budget perhaps but I'm sure they are great boots. And they only need to save your ankles once to be worth their price and more...

I clicked on your link was reading through the ad and this feature caught my eye:

I started wondering about this since my Reichl-boots have the hooks on the upper part of the shoe (two last lacings?) I think about the risk of entanglement (because I know the risk exists) every once in a while but have yet to do anything about it.

I'm curious, and the question is: Has anyone ever experienced or witnessed a base jump where the jumper has experienced a "bootlace hook" caught in a line? Like deployment really head down, or some other kind of weird shit. If so, what was the chain of events and end result?

I agree! I spent hours trying to figure out how to put my feet into them, and eventually realized that I was attempting to put my left foot into the boot designed for the right foot. Sheez!!! Would it really have been so much trouble for the manufacturers to label the freaking things?! And don't even get me started on the "laces" (I think this is the correct term). They are basically these strings that help tighten the boot once your foot is inside it. All very clever, but just pulling them tight only works for a few seconds! Some googling revealed that you need to tie them together, but there's a special way to do this!!!! Otherwise (trust me on this) it'll be really difficult to untie them. After some more googling I found a webpage the shows you what knot to use.

As far as breaking them in, I just went hiking and jumping whilst wearing them. I knew I was taking a chance by not following the proper break-in technique, whatever it might be. There must be a manual for this procedure somewhere, but I couldn't find it - perhaps it's in German? Anyway, despite my total disregard for this procedure, the boots have served me very well. Long hikes and 200 jumps later, and they are still super solid and comfortable.

Yes I have seen this at the bridge that everyone jumps in S. Idaho. Jumper went VERY head low, dumps and a line gets caught in boot hook. Jumper was wearing just regular hiking boots (not Hanwags, Crespi, etc. type) with shorts. After a couple "oh shit kicks" line clears, jumper swings into head up position, and lands fine. All happened in a matter of seconds. Obviously could have been a whole lot worse.

Always remember, if it (boots, knee/shin pads, elbow/forearm pads, mounted camera gear, etc.) is possible to snag on something it eventually will. May not be you but that other poor bastard you are jumping with that everyone ends up talking about.

I always try to cover up my body armor and any other snag-potential points. This is why I prefer the Hanwags because of the eyelet lacing....no hooks!

yes, harden the fuck up, but here's the way i used to do it in the service:

(in all seriousness)
Soak boots in vinegar water solution overnight.
Walk 12 miles in them or until dry.
Treat feet for injuries.
Repeat if necessary, after adding moleskin to sore places.
Eventually, they'll be a second skin.

I jump with boots with gnarly hooks on em...just make sure you wear big hiking socks, pull em up and fold them over the top of the boots over the hooks...then nothing to snag

Here's the thing with Hanwags , you don't want to soak them or break them in on purpose, cause then you lose the support that you were after in the first place. I would recommend just using a good pair of socks ( I prefer the Smartwool medium hiker ) Also, I don't lace the top 4 eyelets until I'm ready to jump. That way you get a little more sensitivity while climbing and you'll keep the leather around the ankle a little stiffer.

The gay roommate was for a summer semester
at a college style apartment complex where each
unit had 4 bedrooms with 4 bathrooms, you shared
the kitchen, porch, and laundry facilities.

Since it was summer time the place had a very low
occupancy so he and I shared the unit for the usual
