(fear of airplanes) < (fear of the added dangers learning to BASE jump without any parachute experience yield)

At least that would be a logical way to look at it.

Just a suggestion

haha you hate airplanes : ) i hate them too. can't fly a commercial flight without a xanax. suggest you suck it up. you'd be amazed at how much courage you can muster up when you have a rig on your back. ride to altitude is nothing but a thing. just don't EVER ride the plane down and you should be OK. : )

of course there's always death camp. : P

Most people on this board would recommend overcoming your fear of airplanes and going that route for your own self preservation.

Be safe.

it's extremely difficult to develop the necessary survival skills without skydiving.

bypassing skydiving greatly increases your odds of severe injury. few people will want to be party to you facing those odds. heck, most jumpers don't want to train anyone, no matter how prepared they are.

choosing not to prepare by skydiving also makes many question your decision skills.

I won't do it for these and other reasons. maybe someone will step up, but how good will they be? how will you know if someone is training you well?

good luck with that.

If you want some excitement then you should do something that scares you.

Like jumping out of an aeroplane.

Who was that giving amusement park rides off the Perrine? Some local school teacher or something?

A community college professor and Miles D.
were going to offer a course that ended with
a PCA from the Perrine but Tom A. and some
of the locals in Twin Falls got it stopped.

Try speed flying if you absolutely will not get on an airplane. My 13 year old sister is scared of planes too.

Re: [halorob] hey new here so help would be appreciated
Just buy a wonderhog off ebay, read a bunch of forums and watch alot of base diving videos, then roll your parachute up and put it in the back pack and go jump off a building. You will be fine. These people saying your going to get hurt don't know what they are talking about. Shit happens whenever it wants too regardless of you experience level. Maybe just not as frequent if you know what your doing. Safety is all about karma, blunts, and strippers.

it is huge that you've remained sober that long and I'll only encourage you to keep your streak going.
Smile

BUT, BASE requires the ability to say, "NO" and climb down when things don't feel right. even if the conditions look perfect, you must have discipline.

if you have been sober 2.5 years, maybe you have enough personal control. the life before sobriety indicates discipline might be a challenge.

only you can decide.

Not trying to be "That guy" or anything but damn!

You asked for help, and you're getting it. Clearly people are saying you should give skydiving a shot first. Read between the lines.
I think you do not properly understand why we do the sport.

There was recently a guy that approached everything properly and got a positive response. If you can find that thread then you'll know where to go from there.

Think before you speak, and read before you think... if you catch my driftWink

P.s. well done on the sobriety, that says a lot about your character

There are a lot of articles and threads you should be reading. Also, get familiar with all the gear and terms. If you sound like you know what you are talking about maybe people will take you more serious and think you are actually putting forth effort to learn what you should already know before someone will toss you off something. If you wanna learn to flat pack buy the DVD from Exit Point Productions Tongue I've been learning all I can about base before my FJC for a while now and still don't feel like I know what I should to start at the P bridge. You are young, no sense in rushing, base isn't going anywhere. Skydiving is fun you shouldn't skip it. You'll learn a shit load just geting your A license. You overcame addiction apparentely, overcome your fear of planes.

I get where you're coming from. I'm merely suggesting you read what this site has to offer before posting. A lot of time and effort has been put into writing the articles on this site, and they are pure gold.

Some of the guys on this forum have been members for many, many, many years... they have seen this same post over and over again.
hell, i'm pretty sure it will always be that wayCrazy

show the sport some love and it might show some back Wink
Take some time, regroup, and come back when you know you are ready to ask the right questions.

If you have found someone willing to help you already then good luck with your quest

I was sitting in an airplane a few times today. I remembered this thread and for a moment I wondered why you don't like planes. I realized it's because you don't know what it's like to jump out of one. If you're sincere about base, give it a try.

Acrobatic body awareness helps but not actually knowing what to do with a parachute doesn't help at all.

Congratulations staying clean so far.

The usual progression is beer, liquor, weed, then hard drugs;
no one goes from pop-rocks directly to crack rocks right?

Same with parachutes, tandem, AFF, fun jumping, then BASE.

Congrats on the clean time --- one day at time Smile

Did you not read the "just kidding" part, and my signature says 'Im just here for the entertainment lesson"

You call me a dick? AND childish? First of all YOU are the child, weather or not you know that or like that, you are, you need to realize that if all that poison doesnt kill you BASE MOST CERTAINLY CAN AND WILL coming on here wanting to get into BASE the easy way is childish and immature, I made my first base jump with XX skydives, very childish and immature. I got lucky and survived, I read on here that luck gives a false since of accomplishment. After lots of personal one on one time with a very good coach/mentor/friend I decided that it was luck, the more you learn about BASE you'll realize that you really dont know much about it.

All these folks on here telling you to jump out of a plane is no different than your AA (leader/mentor/whatever) telling you "one day at a time". You seem to be smart enough to take that advice. Why not take the advice on here? READ READ READ everything on here. I personally would rather stand at the exit point that ride in a plane~ whatever, but I KNOW I NEED THAT PLANE to build my survival skills. Three or four years ago the folks at the DZ would ream my ass for making a 180 30-40 ft off the ground, now they just tell the students not watch me. There is no way I could do that now if I didnt practice and develop that at 5000 ft. FROM A PLANE.

This is not an adventure, this is a disease that gives you a death sentence, so to be able to retire form BASE before it retires you you need to what ever it takes, WHAT EVER IT TAKES to learn and survive and have fun.

So, with that said, Im sorry if I offended you by being a dick. Now go jump out of a plane and if you are ever in Tennessee I will show you a thing or two, BUT NO MOONSHINE FOR YOU!!!

His request kind of reminds me of watching my Dad and his friends watch skydivers from our backyard In the 70's.
They were drinking beer and saying how they were going to do that tomorrow...they never did.
I was 12, I walked over to the DZ, about 400 yards away (Pelican skydivers in Ridgely, MD) and asked the the guy at the counter "I want to learn how to parachute." All he said was, "how old are you?" and I replied 12. He said very matter of factly, "Sure, but come back when you are 16."
My point being, I can appreciate your interest, but you need to progress from skydiving to learn essential canopy control and basic rigging.
Come back after you have completed the minimum amount of jumps to at least get your A license, then you wont get dog piled by folks that know the results of what can happen on a BASE jump.
