Renaming the Mushroom
Hello ALL,

I am aware that site naming is generally bad etiquette, but this comes from the french BASE forum :

The French (lead by Erich Beaud) have decided to rename the Eiger Mushroom " Ueli" as a remembrance gesture to honor Ueli Gegenschatz who opened the spot.

In reply to:
Je suis en train de travailler sur le nouveau topo. J'ai pris la liberté de rebaptisé le champignon de l'Eiger au nom de Ueli Gengenschatz. Je ne peux penser à ce type merveilleux sans en éprouver une immense tristesse. J'aimerais que désormais on ne parle de ce spot qu'en le nommant le "Ueli". IL l'avait ouvert. Ce serait un bel hommage.
Si l'un d'entre vous , parlant bien anglais , pouvait transmettre ce message de ma part, sur les forums étrangers, je l'en remercie d'avance.
J'espère que vous serez tous d'accord avec moi. Ueli était vraiment un homme formidable ,humainement parlant.

"Hello, I am currently working on the new "topo". I took the liberty to rename the Eiger Mushroom to the name of Ueli Gegenschatz. I can not think about this wonderful guy without feeling an immense sadness. I would like that from now on, we would speak about this spot by naming it the "Ueli". He opened it. It would be a nice tribute.
If one of you who speaks enough english could transmit this message to the international forums, I thank you in advance.
I hope you will all agree with me. Ueli was humanly speaking a tremendous person.

No disrespect to Ueli - he was an amazing person (speaking from personal experience) - but someone has to eat a lot of mushrooms to come up with the idea of renaming the Mushroom to anything. Angelic

Instead of renaming an old site, do it up right and find a NEW site that exemplifies the kind of guy and jumper Ueli was and name that site after him.

I am agreed with rename the Eiger Mushroom "Ueli". Ulie was a very nice base jumper , very nice person too and a pioneer in the swiss valley. I think that rename this spot Ueli is a great gesture to honor Ueli Gegenschatz

I never met Ueli personally, but what I have heard he was a nice person and had a great contribution in jumping in Switzerland. I hope that his achievements will be remembered without the need of renaming an exit that has earned it's name by itself. If Ueli called it "the mushroom", so shall we. If somebody opens a new exit and names it to honour him, that's a great gesture.

I venture to suggest that this whole idea is not deprived sense. in spite of that a question is point at issue - he deserves it (point of view of the one who communicated with Uli). May be we can think up that his name was present there nevertheless.. anyhow… in order to someone will ask some day – who is Ueli?
He was the Bright Person. Not many Bright Persons remain on the Earth…Frown

I would rather live then be dead an have my name tagged to a rock.

But serious. Ueli was an excellent person. And modest too. He could have moved to have his name tagged to the exit point while he was still with us. He choose not to.
Also, where did the name mushroom come from? I think from the climbers and I guess they still use it.

Anyway, I am not a voter.
