Re: [psf] hour glass type tower question
First thing that pops into my mind is ARE YOU FUCKING CRAZY? NOBODY JUMPS FROM AN HOUR GLASS SHAPED OBJECT OVER 500 FT TALL

Second thing that pops into my mind, what is the object made of? Can the wind flow thru it or does it go around it? Are the corners square or is the structure round? More details...lots of them. Is this sructure in the middle of nowhere, is it in the middle of town, on the edge of town? Other objects around it? Next to it?

Re: [psf] hour glass type tower question
I would try and jump it in a light wind environment on the field side. Take a decent delay 2-3 seconds and fly away. I would continue this practice with slightly higher winds until the canopy ride is a little too exciting Wink

I say go for it. I think I even know what type of structure it is, and I know of at least 3 that have been jumped, but I may be wrong.

Confusion, Obtuse, or Subtle Humor
Alan, his over 500' hourglass object sounds a
whole lot safer than many things I've jumped.
Or were you joking & I am missing the humor?

I agree with what
Nic typed...however the OP's
profile says 500 BASE jumps and 4 years, which
makes me think this jumper either lives near a
legal object or is exaggerating their experience.

A Wings container?......sounds like a skydiver to me

Re: [psf] hour glass type tower question
what kind of objects have you jumped?
how does this one compare?
what delays and deployment methods are YOU most familiar/comfortable?

it really is hard to give valid advice without more background info...

Just make sure to open where the building is at its thinnest part. Laugh

Re: [TreeRat] Confusion, Obtuse, or Subtle Humor
my profile is old, and its pulled from dropzone.com
I have 1300+ skydives, only base jumps have from Brisgeday. My delays have ranged from ~1-2 seconds on first yrs bridge day, to 4-5 second delays on other yrs.
I have done no static line type jumps,
qranted not the same, but hold pro rating for skydiving, so I say at least better then average canopy skills, but base canopies definitely have felt like a different animal.

Yes of course I was kidding.

I can think of a number of "hour-glass" shaped women that i'd jump ON...but i'm not jumping off for at least 8 seconds! Tongue YEE-HAW!!!!

Go take a FJC and get a mentor. No one here knows anything. The internet is fake, you can't die here, you can die out there. Opening up a new object takes a lot of consideration and planning. There are things in which you don't know that you can only know from experience. Go to the bridge in Idaho and you'll know what 500 feet feels like, slider down and up. I would highly discourage you from attempting this without more experience and training. This is, as you well know, not skydiving or a bridge day jump. You are not at a legal event with plenty of emt's and loads of people willing to "help" you. You should be jumping this object at night as well, bridge day is over well before sunset.

this object is sounding more and more like a nuclear power plant cooling tower. Crazy

If it IS in fact a cooling tower, and it's operating at the time, there will be lots of convection airflow in the immediate area, which may induce a large amount of turbulence. Something to be aware of...

nuclear power plant cooling tower

and it's operating at the time

Well shit then go ahead and jump the fucker.
If the object strike doesn't kill you then the
radiation will finish the job Laugh

yep, jump a fence at a nuke plant while wearing a backpack.

nothing problematic there...

ive jumped one of these objects. pm me any other qustions.
no i dont think the shape matters in reasonable winds. treat it like a building. the roundness makes the airflow much cleaner than square corners of a B.

Re: [wwarped] Confusion, Obtuse, or Subtle Humor
to set the record straight..
It is NOT A NUCLEAR cooling tower.
and this objext has mandatory shut downs for two weeks every summer.
I am trying to do some homework ahead of time, and open my eyes to things to consider.

But hey, if I'm wrong and its secretly a nuc plant in disquise, at least I'll be glowing by the end of the jump.
Shortcut
Re: [psf] Confusion, Obtuse, or Subtle Humor
in all seriousness, the major consideration i see with this object isn't the object's wind deflection, but site security. If it shuts down during the summer for 2 weeks for maintenance, there'll be people around it, around the clock, fixing shit. I work in a chemical plant, and even though we're not nuclear, the security there is what i'd call strong.
Just something to think about.

haha base has made me realize how much homeland security fucking blows... really depends where you are, and if you're the first doing it, take into account the consequences. I've jumped only to find out later that the guards on site had shoot-to-kill authority...

in regards to your question, if you're unsure treat like you would treat a B or E thats never been jumped before (as these are usually the objects that are most wind dependent) and remove winds from the equation!!! Jump it when there are NO winds. And I mean 0 winds, a small breeze and head home... especially if all your jumps are at bridge day. Unfortunately it seems like you have a relatively short window from which to get in. It's your decision whether taking the chance on winds is worth it because you cant wait forever, you're the only one whos gonna get fucked up/killed.

and ya, get a mentor

Re: [doogi] Confusion, Obtuse, or Subtle Humor
And someone with a couple of 900ft bridge day jumps has no business on a B or E. Or so i think, i hate safety nazi's but there is also some sense that needs drilled in. Couple of off headings on forgiving objects.
