Wingsuit mod
Hey all, just curious, has anyone ever thought of combining wingsuit booties with track cleats?
What i'm envisioning is something akin to the cleats with removable spikes that runners use. The bottom of the bootie would be a lot more rigid, but there would be the option to screw in cleats of varying lengths for sketchy exits, say, in LB just for example. They wouldn't be as aggressive as crampons, but they also wouldn't be as invasive, and you can get spike lengths up to 1". If you didn't want them on a particular jump, or in the summer, you could put plugs called blanks into the threads and the bottom would be like your average tennis shoe tread.

Thoughts anyone?

nitro has vibram bootsoles on his booties. good idea..

having 1" spikes on your feet could make for some shitty landings though...you'd absolutely have to be high stepping it on landing, vs the usual "bootie slide".

Maybe Nitro will post a photo?

What about something like a set of YakTrax? http://www.yaktrax.com/products.aspx

That would be awesome. I used 6-tooth crampons with wingsuit but the problem is they're only in the middle of the shoe. I wore them under the bootie. The leather bottom of the bootie is slippery as hell on the ice. 6-tooth crampons plus booties with small removable spikes would be just perfect. Just booties with spikes probably won't be enough to get to the exit point safely.

I wear those over the booties:

Perfect grip even on Via Ferrata platform.

see?? there's no such thing as an original idea!!
Thanks for posting the link.

That's exactly what i was envisioning, and even better, since they don't have to be a permanent part of the bootie. I like the replacable spikes, where you can add longer ones if it warrants.

If you're referring to full 12-tooth crampons, those long front forward-looking teeth look scary: imagine them catching under a tree root that you don't see under the snow/ice just when you're pushing off the mountain... That would make a nice day very bad. And you need to wear them over the bootie, which may or may not work. 6-tooth crampons can be worn under the bootie and eliminate the danger described above, but leave the front of your foot slip-prone.

We had a lot of wingsuit jumps done in Baffin with crampons over the booties.

The type with the wire bail didn't work, but the kind with the plastic V-shaped toe piece with webbing thingie worked fine.

Be careful not to step on your canopy after you land though!

Micro Spikes are the bomb and would fit over the booties. They are like mini crampons without all the fuss. Great for Climbing mtns in winter to sweet exits.

Re: [mfob] Wingsuit mod
I played with these in the store and found that that soft easily stretching rubber rim can easily come off the shoe if you're traversing the steep slope or your foot loses grip and starts sliding sideways. Very easy. These will be alright for walking on flat icy surface, but that's pretty much it. Also, if spikes get stuck in tree/bush roots as you're pushing off the exit, that soft rubber will let the spikes stay in wood and decelerate your feet instead of yanking the spikes out.

Yea, But I got a pair and instead of being a re-tard I got some straps to keep em on. But I agree otherwise.
